I would like some opinions on whether or not I should send this coin to NCS for conservation. They do remove carbon spotting, at least they say they do. Well, having said that, here is the coin in question. I bought it awhile back from a fellow CCF member.

I thought carbon spots were permanent.

This is from their site:

NCS accepts for evaluation all certified or raw coins, tokens and medals. NCS can remove contaminants such as PVC, soils, tarnish, carbon spots, verdigris and encrustation from the surface. NCS does not perform repairs or mechanical alterations of any kind. Removing detrimental material from the surface of an item may dramatically improve its appearance and eye appeal. This service is designed to further preserve the originality of the material only and prevent the damage that can result from contamination that is left untreated.

If I could have carbon spots professionally removed for my favorite coins, I would do it in a heartbeat.

My suggestion is to just put it away and forget about having it redone. Those spots are there now and getting rid of them will leave a mark where they were. And they would charge you a lot for cleaning and reslabbing. For a coin that sells for over $200 might still be worth the extra money if they can really make it look a lot better.
Attempting to have them fix it all up really depends on if you plan on selling it or just wanted it for your own collection.

There's limits to what they can do. Personally, at best, they could lighten some of the spots but they cannot be removed. If they did, there'd be something ugly underneath. You can post it in the "ask NCS" section of the NGC forums, but the answer will probably be "send it in for evaluation".....and it's not free. LOL

Hate to say it, but this is one of those coins where "if the problem bothers you, sell it and buy a problem-free coin".

Yeah, thought about that too, especially considering the value of this coin.

Not a huge Lincoln Cent collector, no offense BadThad , but I do like some of the varieties and this was one of them. I will probably just sell it and hold out for a problem free coin

Thanks
