I took a page from one of the people here and started swapping coins from vending machines as long as I thought I could avoid stares. Nothing yet but I haven't tried very much. Its laborious but a nice alternative way to 'gamble' without switching paper for obscene amounts of pocket change.
Anyway do you think it would be possible to get silver or any unusual coins from them? Or would you only expect run of the mill coins?

some vending machines or coin counter machines reject silver and foreign coins due to their weight compared to modern coins. You might still find a modern coin for your collection.

I have to admit that I've done this a few times (nothing excessive) to try and fill a couple of holes in my modern US coin collection. But lately I've caught up to date with all the circulation issues and I'm also bold enough to ask for rolls at US banks! (Hey, if all else fails, I can bring them back to Canada, dump, and cash in a profit! -- just kidding on that)

Then why would it be possible to find silver in bank rolls since the bank coin counter would reject silver and oddities as well?

I believe the machines the Fed uses to roll coins accept silver and other stuff, I've found silver dimes and War Nickels before. i dont think these were rolled by a customer.

I've actually gotten a silver War Nickel out of a vending machine as change back. It was a pretty cool, and unexpected find.

So far the best I've gotten from the vending machine was a 2009-D nickel and a few pre-60's. Was pretty excited about the 2009-D because it was my first!
I've done the swapping change with the vending machine some. The only thing I'm a little concerned with, is running the machine out of change. Then everyone would have to use "exact change only" and would be wanting to hurt me for it!
But hey! No pain, no gain! Right?!

might be better to just go to the bank and buy some rolls of coins and search for silver vs doing vending machines

I did something similar to this, except with an ice cream machine at the mall. I would put in 4 quarters and out popped a dollar coin (the ones I got were all pres dollars except for one sac dollar) Thats how I got Taylor, Polk, Pierce, and Monroe. But since then they've gotten rid of the machine

i have gotten a silver dime from a vending machine that someone I knew used to get change to use in another vending machine that wouldn't take bills. She got mad that she got 10 dimes back then more mad when one of the dimes was rejected by the machine she wanted to use. I looked at it and saw it was silver. I got it off her for free and she searched and found another dime to use to get her pop. You can get silver from them, but a lot of them reject silver from being taken
