All the stuff is nothing just a little grease on the die. Take some better photos of the date. You might have something with the date but not sure photos too blurry.

This has nothing to do with grease.
It's die wear...and there's nothing going on with the date, it's normal.

Yep good old MD. I thought the letter L was affected by grease but Coppercoins is right.

Be specific... The 4 in the date shows Machine Doubling. Very common, completely normal, and NOT a variety or error. The ridge line around the rest of the coin (the actual question in this thread) is die wear. That's not an opinion...it's fact. That's just what it is. I didn't question my own response.

That ridge is typically seen only on Zincolns, I do not think I have ever seen it on a pre-1982 cent.

and you probably won't because this type of die wear is only known on zinc cents - which lends to proving that it is die wear. Zinc makes the steel dies wear differently than brass.
