Can I get a little help and refresher on cause of this? Was the die wearing out or planchet not centered on this LMC? What drew my attention to it was the L in Liberty almost appears to be an capital I. However closer inspection you can still barely see the bottom leg of the L. Fine scratches are also present in the field above LIBERTY.

Thanks

All the stuff is nothing just a little grease on the die. Take some better photos of the date. You might have something with the date but not sure photos too blurry.

This has nothing to do with grease.

It's die wear...and there's nothing going on with the date, it's normal.

Thanks for the feedback 1913 and CC.
Ok, die wear was my first thought,I will have to read up on the grease thing, thanks to you both. I had already taken more shots of the date. I don't know why the 4 is appearing the way it is, can't be a DD all by itself ?

What does the grease do... deposit on the die or the blank, then the coin is pressed causing a deeper depression at that location throwing the impression at that area out of norm?

That is Machine Doubling. Flat shelf like. It can affect one device or several.

Be specific...

The 4 in the date shows Machine Doubling. Very common, completely normal, and NOT a variety or error.

The ridge line around the rest of the coin (the actual question in this thread) is die wear.

That's not an opinion...it's fact. That's just what it is. I didn't question my own response.

That ridge is typically seen only on Zincolns, I do not think I have ever seen it on a pre-1982 cent.

and you probably won't because this type of die wear is only known on zinc cents - which lends to proving that it is die wear. Zinc makes the steel dies wear differently than brass.
