I have been wondering if faint die cracks rub off in circulation (is it possible) if the coin was spent about back in the day. I bring this up cos I have ms coins which have faint cracks yet on some of the pics posted on VW (circulated coins) you do not see these faint cracks on the pics.

I would post this on the classic coin side of things but this question is more geared towards folks who study vams and look at these nuances closely.

Thanks

I suppose it's possible. More likely, though, is die state. Cracks progress on dies, just like a crack in your windshield. Your coin was probably struck later than the ones you see on VW, and therefore has more cracking.

Most of the die cracks we discuss are on the periphery of the coin. Think about how coins wear; by the time the edge of the fields are involved in wear, the coin is pretty worn indeed. So, I'd suspect peripheral cracks to linger throughout the coin's life. Cracks closer to the center will wear.

That's the area (hair, on the wreath etc) I am noticing it at.

PS
Say...on that 21p 3ed2...you still mulling it over? Also one of your dissertations on that posts enabled me to sort out 2 more that have been sitting for a while.

Actually I'm a little unsure what we're trying to achieve with the 3ED2. We know what it is - where are we going with it?
