I am looking to buy a 1895 Morgan. New to collecting. Which mint mark is the better coin for collecting?

Thanks.

I have neither, YET. I wouldn't just set my mind on one or the other, although if I had one of each to only select one, and they were very compable in quality, bag marks, amount of circulation, etc. I would probably select the O.

Personally, I do not buy my Morgans to fill a hole. I have to like the coin overall, brillance, strike, boldness, clarity, clear fields, minimum of bag marks, if any, usually no tone as it does not appeal to me. I also do not care if its slabbed or not, I prefer raw, although I have NGC and PCGS, I do not care and place no value on one of these slabs with a 63,64, or 65 on it. Most coins look horrible even with these grades. Stick to buy the coin, not the slab.

Good Hunting!

The question you put forth requires IMO, a personal preference, I personally would go for the "S" I have seen them both in Mint state, I just like the 1895-S Morgan, the price is also out of this world, if you were to buy say a Mint State 65-66 PCGS slabbed coin.

If you were like some people I know, and obtained these say 30 years ago, you would of stood some chance of NOT paying near that much, Good luck...PS, If you fill holes, like I and collect types also, buy them because you love the look or for what ever reason, enjoy yourself.....

I personally love anything from the New Orleans Mint. I would buy the O before the S :)

Also I did not mention, the "S" minted coins are of a lower mintage, which does not support the price between the both, but any coin, from the Granite Lady is a very sweet coin to behold, just my opinion.....PS, I also like the New Orleans struck coins, but have this attraction towards the S mints coins, which were and are known for the quality, in both strike and a crisper looking coin produced. put into their coinage, at least before the 1990's.....
