The Pictures from the ebay auction 1880-P Morgan Obverse Reverse I bid on this 7-day auction right after it came out ... I saw something but had to wait the entire 7 days to snipe a winning bid and then wait until it got here today to confirm. I was 99% sure but I've bought a lot of phantoms looking for this particular VAM. Not this time ... he shoots ... he scores! A VAM 8 This one will grade AU 53+ and still shows proof-like fields.

That's some pretty fancy pickin' from an ebay photo. Those markers are tiny! Now I'm gonna have to look through my "junk" Morgans for animal ears. So, over $1200 for this VAM in PCGS XF-40 according to VAMWorld. Would you now send it for attribution, then put it on the 'bay? If I could get that price that's what I'd do! Congrats!

Aaron, In hand it's AU53 with PL fields. $4000+ in the price guide for a VAM in very high demand. There are no UNC attributed coins in the PCGS POPs. It's going to PCGS soon.

In today's market, the value of the coin is subjective at best. At least in my opinion. Personally, I don't look at the perceived "value", as much how it would fit into my collection.

oh guess I should tell everyone what the MS-65 from Teletrade is, its a VAM-82. Sorry for not mentioning that earlier. I knew SeatedNut and a few others would know when they saw it but others may not

Byran1315, Gorgeous B1's! And those VAM 82's are easy to spot (7TF, parallel, long nock, detached leaves, only closed nostril with detached leaves, and that die crack starting below the third right star). and for Harrison ... with shipping $45.

I am on a mission to upgrade my whole registry set, then I am thinking about venturing out to the whole TOP100 coins and studying them and trying to recognize them when I see them. My only problem is when I am looking for something else that is when I see a B1 I would love to have and there goes my money. I am helpless against them. I am waiting for Collectors Society to add the 85 to the registry also so I can add it to the herd. Sorry to hijack your thread like this but I am probably going to act like a newbie once I venture out into the whole TOP100 coins

I'm completely new to the idea of VAMS. How can you see the small details with those pictures? I can see the "bunny ears" of the 7 covered by the 8 on the 1880, but that is about it. Are you just using ctrl and the scroll wheel to get a good look with a trained eye?

Quote: I'm completely new to the idea of VAMS. How can you see the small details with those pictures? It can be tough sometimes. You have to pretty much know what you are looking for and when you can't see one attribute in the pictures you look for others and match them up. It can be very difficult when dealing with some pictures but can also be pretty easy with others, but it basically comes down to knowledge of what to look for to differentiate one from another. Take the first picture I posted above (i know not the one you are asking about but just as an example). First thing I look at is the Reverse, if it has a long arrow shaft (also known as a long nock), then I look at the olive branch to see if its disconnected. If it is I then look at the Obverse. If it has a full nostril I know the VAM-82 is the only one with a full nostril so I know its a VAM-82. If I can't see the full nostril I look for the die crack coming from the second and almost touching the third star and I know its a VAM-82. If I can't see any of those I look for cracks on the Reverse to match up or die chips that match up to a specific VAM. So it is really allot of knowledge to be able to know what you are looking at and when you look at enough of them it becomes easier to tell but sometimes it can still be hard to see any details at all and you just have to take a chance on what you think you see

I copy the pictures posted on the various sites and enlarge them with basic tools provided by MS Windows. If I see something that peaks my interest (see Bryan1315's note above) I will right-click on the photo and copy to a folder I have open on my desktop. Then I use MS Office Picture Manager. It allow me to enlarge and change the brightness and contrast. Once I'm done, I just delete the pictures from the folder.
