Hi,I know nothing of US dimes,so I need your help.
An acquaince is offering to sell me 100 silver US dimes for $312
There are 75 Mercury dimes,48 different dates and marks
And 25 Roosevelt dimes all different
I have 6 hours to decide before he sends them for consignment sale, not enough time for research as I'll only be able to view them once before he sends them off.
If they are collectable looking coins, how risky is it to buy them?
He says he is asking only 20% above melt.

I've seen similar lots here under melt. But in a couple months, might be under.

I am by no means an expert on this but with the silver value at $3.11 for a silver Merc or Rosevelt dime I don't understand where he is coming up with 20% above melt.

I believe you would be buying them at melt. Which is a good thing if the price of silver keeps going up. Maybe start out offering 10% below melt.

There are not many key dates so if you have only one chance look for a 1916-D, 1921 and 1921-D, 1931-D and 1931-S and of course the 1942/1. If you find any of those, Buy.

I hope someone comes along and helps you further.

Tell him you go $300 and no more. Then explain to him how the consigner will take a hefty cut of the sale and he may end up with way less than that. Consigners can sometimes take as much as 50% of the final sale price. It would probably be in his best interest to take your offer.

It also depends on the wear on the coins... The more wear on the coins is less silver that you will receive. It might not be much of a difference, but I think it matters when silver is so high... Just my humble opinion, Good Luck

I agree with Tim 300 no more. But I would go on to say if I found something worth a premium, I would come back and give him more money. He's not going to get that from consignment.

I agree, offer him 300 bucks. He will not get that much taking them to consignment after they charge their fee.
Rest in Peace

Tim had the same price I do, and the same reason. Or ask the seller what his net price on consignment will be and offer just a little less, pointing out he gets cash NOW, not in months.

I doubt there is high demand for US coins in Canada, just like versy vice-a.

I would have said go for the place you said you would take them. When someone wants to hurry up a sale, usually there is a reason and usually not a good one.

I agree with others by offering $300. Most consignors I know (and which I don't use) charge a minimum of 30%.
