Soooo ... you're thinking why in the geppers is David writing about Post-Mint-Damaged ( PMD) coins ...

Because as a roll searcher we come across these in our finds. Some are instructive when the original intent was to deceive the unwary ... some are puzzling as to how they were created ... and IMHO all are great fun as examples of how far some folks will go to alter coins ... all are found at the cost of the coin ... 5 cents each in the case of the following Jefferson PMD that I have found.

Some photos and tongue-in-cheek commentary on a few of my favorite PMD Jefferson ... all found by me in bank rolls.

1995-P Gears

The aspiring mechanical engineer was working on his term project ... figured he needed a gear and started on this 1995-P Jefferson. After cutting a few teeth decided it was too much work and returned the coin to the wild.

1959 Reverse Eraser

The obverse is a normal VF 1959 Jefferson ... someone decided to erase the reverse ... leaving only Monticello and a bit of the interior legend. Why?

1996-P Double Clip Fake

We discussed this PMD coin in this forum. It was created with intention to deceive ... the obvious markers of fake error include the fact that the clips are 180 degrees apart ... the rim is intact .. and the legends are squeezed inwards.

1999-P Signed Jefferson

Sooo ... I can imaging young Tyler Kopp sneaking into his dads shop and hammering away on this coin ... a gift to his HS date ... but she rejects him ... and in frustration he spends the coin at the local 7-11.

One of many counterstamped Jefferson in my PMD collection ... but the only one with a full name.

If you know Tyler ... let him know that I have his nickel.

1985-D Squeeze Job

Another coin with intention to deceive ... the PMD here is one coin pressed against this one to give the appearance of a mint error.

Serious Road Rash

We find lots of these ... coins that make us wonder just how in the world did they get so beat up.

This is a typical road rash Jefferson ... date unknown.

2000-P Grinder Nightmare

Mr. Jefferson was hiding in the back rooms ... but the man with the high-speed grinder found him and executed a significant reduction of material ...

Ouch.

Ultimate Dryer Coin

This is identifiable as a 2004 Jefferson only because of the reverse design. A true ' Dryer Coin' ... weight is 4.77 grams ... soon it would have been basal state.

Soooo ... some fun PMD from my collection ...

What do you have to show us?

I really enjoy this type of collection. I don't have any nickels. All mine are cents.

Thanks for posting it!

nice PMD collection. most definitely the nicest I've ever seen. oh, wait...it is the only one I've ever seen! I think your collection is ingenious and creative. I also think that the 'road rash' nickel could have been in a garbage disposal. I suppose half the fun is wondering 'how?'

Your "double clip" was not clipped in any way. It was smashed standing on its edge, which is why the flat spots are 180 degrees apart. You will notice the rim is still completely intact, which would not be the case if someone removed metal from the coin.

Oddly enough, I know someone with the last name of "KOPP"

Ask if they have a relative named Tyler.

Thanks Chuck for your comments on the '1996-P Double Clip Fake' ... although I thought I covered all that ground in my original commentary.

Perhaps I missed something there?

1996-P Double Clip Fake double clip, or squeezed in a vice?
