Soooo ... you're thinking why in the geppers is David writing about Post-Mint-Damaged (
PMD) coins ...

Because as a roll searcher we come across these in our finds. Some are instructive when the original intent was to deceive the unwary ... some are puzzling as to how they were created ... and IMHO all are great fun as examples of how far some folks will go to alter coins ... all are found at the cost of the coin ... 5 cents each in the case of the following Jefferson
PMD that I have found.
Some photos and tongue-in-cheek commentary on a few of my favorite
PMD Jefferson ... all found by me in bank rolls.
1995-P GearsThe aspiring mechanical engineer was working on his term project ... figured he needed a gear and started on this 1995-P Jefferson. After cutting a few teeth decided it was too much work and returned the coin to the wild.
1959 Reverse EraserThe obverse is a normal VF 1959 Jefferson ... someone decided to erase the reverse ... leaving only Monticello and a bit of the interior legend. Why?
1996-P Double Clip FakeWe discussed this
PMD coin in this forum. It was created with intention to deceive ... the obvious markers of fake error include the fact that the clips are 180 degrees apart ... the rim is intact .. and the legends are squeezed inwards.
1999-P Signed JeffersonSooo ... I can imaging young Tyler Kopp sneaking into his dads shop and hammering away on this coin ... a gift to his HS date ... but she rejects him ... and in frustration he spends the coin at the local 7-11.
One of many counterstamped Jefferson in my
PMD collection ... but the only one with a full name.
If you know Tyler ... let him know that I have his nickel.

1985-D Squeeze JobAnother coin with intention to deceive ... the
PMD here is one coin pressed against this one to give the appearance of a mint error.
Serious Road RashWe find lots of these ... coins that make us wonder just how in the world did they get so beat up.

This is a typical road rash Jefferson ... date unknown.
2000-P Grinder NightmareMr. Jefferson was hiding in the back rooms ... but the man with the high-speed grinder found him and executed a significant reduction of material ...
Ouch.
Ultimate Dryer CoinThis is identifiable as a 2004 Jefferson only because of the reverse design. A true '
Dryer Coin' ... weight is 4.77 grams ... soon it would have been basal state.

Soooo ... some fun
PMD from my collection ...
What do you have to show us?
