This is my wifes coin that she got from her grandmother. We just wanted to know your opinion on the grade because I have no experience grading gold. thanks!

I'm no expert on Gold either but I'd say AU-53 or so since surfaces seem to have some light wear

Being a jewelry piece, it likely would go XF/AU Details. It's a melt value coin at this point and since it's considered a common-date - it's problems are not a concern.

I'd call it EF-40 for detail. There is significant loss of detail on central areas of the coin like Liberty's hair, the eagle's neck, and the talons. The denticles at the rim have been somewhat protected by the mount and have the look of a higher grade (AU) coin.

The "used in jewelry" status of the piece basically puts it in the bullion category. The 1901-O is a slightly better date but this one now has very little numismatic premium.

I agree with the EF-40 details and melt value. Fortunately melt value is fairly high with gold as much as it is.

melt value only being a jewelry piece... The edge is usually affected when a coin is used in jewelry

i told her how I'm jealous that she has a coin more valuable than any of mine, and she doesn't even collect. and I told her if it was mine i'd take it out of the bezzel asap and protect it. I don't know if it's just me, but seeing coins as jewelry is a sin to me.
Rest in Peace
