Hey all,
i just started getting into roll hunting and am loving it. I'm doing it mostly for just the silver because I'm still fairly new and dont know what else to look for.. Anyway, I'm not to big in it I usually get about $100 of quarters and $100 worth of dimes each time. I'm finding on average that I'm pulling a pre 1968 dime for every $100 (only searched three times so far $300 total). But I have yet to pull ANY quarters. Is this normal? are quarters pretty much picked over. As a matter of fact the last set of quarters I looked through didnt have Anything earlier then 2003... O.o. the rolls looked as though they came direct from the mint in those white and orange rolls.
What is the experience of others doing this? how many quarters do you usually find (pre 1968)and or should I just stick to dimes...
thanks

Hello and to the community. I average 1 - 3 dimes per box I search ($250). So pulling 1 every $100 is good in my opinion. As for quarters...they are less productive on average. When searching Quarters, dimes and nickels the white Distribution rolls (may have different color letters but with a white wrapper) are a waste of time now a days. The distribution center sorts these denominations and you will be lucky to find anything older then 2000 in the nickels and quarters. I have searched a few white rolls of dimes in the last few weeks. There were coins older then 2000 in them but no silver and very few older then 1980. I believe you can still have luck with the white distribution rolls of cents. I have not heard either way lately and I have not found any in my boxes as of late. There are a lot of people searching for silver now a days. Take what you can and be happy when you find some. Free range silver is becoming a thing of the past. Good luck and happy hunting. cladhunter13

IMO quarters are the FUNNEST to look through. I get alot of cool forgein coins when I do so ( like recently I pulled a $10 jamaican coin that wasn't even round! )
YES quarters are the hardest to find silver in as they are very large coins and silver is easy to spot ( I don't even look at the coins half the time when searching for silver because a silver quarter usually has a white rim ) If you find any silver quarters, they are most likely to be 1965 - 1968 as those are the years hardest to easily distinguish as queen victorias portrait changed in 1965. I personally find mostly 1967 silver quarters ( the couger ). I have found one 2000 Health (april) silver quarter while searching. It is supposed to be a NCT collectors coin you buy from the mint worth about $15.
Dimes are your best bet when looking for silver, they are the smallest coin and alot of pre-1980 dimes are very worn out from coin changers etc so its harder to just look at the coin and know that it's silver ( unless its a pre-1960, most of those dimes are VERY white faded, and when put against a whole slew of 2008-2011 dimes you can easily tell lol )
my advice would be to drop the quarters if you are strictly looking for silver, you will find alot more in the dimes. but if your looking for an adventure, drop the dimes and pick up the quarters because you never know what you're going to find!

@motoryoda- hunting through dime and quarter rolls can be frustrating......like trying to find that one needle in a gigantic haystack

@hopping_rabbit - yes it is very frustrating sometimes, I've gone through $1000 worth of quarters before with no silver coins found, however the coins I did pull from the rolls were well worth it! Silver is a tough'n to come by nowadays, I'll have days were I don't find a coin even worth adding to the collection and some days I'll find 3 silver coins in an hour! you just never know whats going to happen, or what you're going to find ( I have found a 2000 Health (april) quarter that was made of silver, turns out it was supposed to be a NCT collectors coin you buy from the mint for about $15 )

In the past week my wife and I have gone throught about $600 worth of quarters, I think we got 1x '65 2x 68 silver, 1x French franc, 1 x British 10 pence, about $20 worth of American (including nearly one complete roll), and one Canada post tolken. It's pretty amazing what people will put in rolls.

For silver it's not bad, Matt_G! I've sorted out so far about $4800 worth and found only one '68...

I may be way off the mark here but couldn't you just run a metal detector over them?

I'd be pretty upset with a full roll of US quarters since our plastic coin rolls hold more quarters. Make sure you get "secure" rolls that haven't been tampered with weird coin counts.
Old nickel is easy to detect - they all look DULL and grey. Silver will mostly be black and grimy-looking.
Your best bet is to look through dimes over quarters.
