It's Machine Doubling. It's flattened, doesn't have notching at the corners, and takes up part of the normal profile of the letters. I hope you're keeping all these machine doubled examples as educational pieces, then going through them every time you find something to compare the characteristics of the doubling. That's the only way you're likely to learn and know the difference.

Coppercoins I was curious as to why like in this case of wrongalots coin is it that what appears to be only 2 letters have this MD and not all the others ? What I understand MDs to always have that flat step up effect. Correct.

Also I wanted to say I appreciate your time and effort you give to educate through your postings and your web site.!

The limited number of devices affected is probably from the amount the coin stuck to the die, the exact angle of its ejection, and the direction the devices face. Because the problem occurs in a split second, it can appear a bit different from coin to coin. Main things to follow are the common rules associated with typical Machine Doubling:

1. The doubling is flattened and shelf-like.
2. The doubling coupled with the letter doesn't take up space wider than a normal letter.
3. There is no notching at the corners of the letters.
