What is the difference between a mint error on a coin and a coin that is simply less than perfect?

^^^This is a platinum proof coin that I had looked at by two different people at local coin stores. Right near the edge next to "In God We Trust" there is a mark that looks to me like a small smudge in the metal. One person said that he did not see anything at all on it and then said it was probably just a tiny bit of oil or dirt that would come right off. In the second store the man said it was probably a tiny imperfection in the metal of the coin itself.

They both said it would not affect the value of the set that I have but they both tried to buy the set off me as soon as they looked at it. One offered me three thousand and the other offered me thirty-one hundred.

My question is, if that is an imperfection in the platinum, is it enough to be considered an error coin? Especially since it is a proof.

Short answer - no. Nobody would want to pay a premium for something so small even if it was something that was caused by the coining press or planchet production.

The whole point to collecting errors is to get oddball coins that are obviously different from normal coins. Too many people seem to forget that point.

It is not an error. If you need the money, go back and get the $3000 right now. This coin is worth about $2000 max.

I would be flying back there if I were you, and sell it.

I think you're right. $3,000 for a 4-pc Plat Proof set would be a lowball offer. 10% back of melt!
