I'm 53 and started collecting again for the first time in a long time. I've always turned up my nose at the newer coins. It just seems like all of the depth and beauty of our US coins was gone. I mean, look at a BU Washington quarter from the old days. Thirties to the sixties. I can just gaze at them in the sunlight and see the beauty. Then take a look at the modern quarters. Kind of looks like a slug or something. The zinc pennies have always been a sore spot in the same way. Until today. I hadn't researched them at all, and today I found out about the errors and varieties. I spent a few hours with the magnifier and it took me back to the good old days when I didn't need a magnifier. Sitting around searching circulated coins like I used to is more fun than just forking over the money for a coin that I want. All is not lost. Maybe that big bag of State Quarters that I've been saving for no special reason can provide some search entertainment too.

- I like it a lot better when holding the coins that feel like "real money". But, like you said, not all is lost. It is the varieties that keep me going.

There are plenty of errors and varieties associated with the State Quarters. I guess the limited and rushed production time of each state kept QC to a minimum.

There are a few true doubled dies and some rotated die errors to look for, but plenty of "other" varieties that people seem to be paying silly money for.

HaHa I kinda feel that way too. After I pick out all the varieties and errors, copper and wheats, Canadian and BU zincs, I feel like the pile of coins left is a pile of trash.

Guess I'm in the minority. I love Zincolns. Lots of varieties and value wise similar monetary value takes up way less space than hoarding copper. If I were chasing copper value I would rather strip junk wire. IMO Zincolns (high grade and varieties) will have been the most overlooked US coin in the last 100 years....

Almost all of the classic coins were reviled in the press of their respective days. Every series I've turned my nose up at, I eventually discover I like.

I agree but for a different reason, spotting, zinc zits, & just plain rotting away, That's what will make any decent example highly collectable.

There won't be many left!
