Today I was in a coin shop with a roll of dimes from the 60s in my pocket. Since I got them out of change in the 60s, I figured I had 5.00 into them. I made the mistake of looking in the display case while waiting my turn. I saw a seated liberty half in EX for 75.00. I thought it would be nice to take home. But when I asked to see it I got to talking and the owner said he had some nicer ones in the back and would go get them if I wanted to see them. I had to leave behind the 1795 silver dollar,

But got this gem instead.

The lighting in the pics do not show the original luster too well. So what are your thoughts on this grade?

Also I would appreciate advice about slabbing it. I have never had a coin slabbed. I know it runs about 30.00. So would it be worth it and, if so, why?

Thanks

She's a beauty.

For me, grading wouldn't be necessary. It may increase the value but I wouldn't ever part with her.
Rest in Peace

It looks around XF details; shouldn't be slabbed.

Very nice coin, I would grade it right at EF-40. I wouldn't have it slabbed.

I appreciate all the info as I need to learn about slabbing vs not slabbing. So could you guys tell me why you would not slab this specific coin?

For that matter, what coin would you get slabbed?

The only thing I know about slabbing is it will cost me about 30.00 and it makes the price, if you sell it (which I do NOT plan to do!), a little higher.

Nice photos! Looks strong for VF-30, maybe too much wear to be an EF contender. Surfaces look original with no problems.

I wouldn't slab it because the cost is relatively high compared to the coin value. Mid-grade, common-date bust halves like this are not often counterfeited so paying to authenticate it isn't necessary IMO. If you wanted to sell the coin I don't think you would get $30 more for it in a slab compared to the price as a raw coin. Therefore, your net proceeds might be less if you had paid to get it graded before selling.

Just my opinion!

Jaobler, Thanks for the info and kind words. However, I am a perfectionist when it comes to taking pics and am just starting/learning how to pics of coins. I normally do glass. I was not really happy with the results I posted, but will work on it. The dealer I got this from had it rated as EX+ and is a reputable dealer who has worked, at times, grading for NGC. I wanted to see the general opinion of people here and highly value everyone's opinions.

About 75% of the Bust Half Dollars I've submitted for certification came back with the notation of "old cleaning", if you send it to ANACS they will place it in a "problem" holder while NGC & PCGS will no doubt body-bag them... I'm not saying your coin is cleaned, just preparing you for what could happen... Maybe one of these days I can post some photos...

I would say hold on to the coin for awhile. Personally, I think the coin is at least xf40. Numismedia puts a price of about $228 @ xf. Wait till a big coin show comes around when one of the big 4 may be present, i.e. pcgs, ngc, anacs, or icg. Ask them. They have always been very helpful, whenever I came with questions.
