Hey guys and gals,

I got a box of nickels yesterday and just got around to opening now. This must have been a box turned in from a collector or something, I'll let the pictures do the talking.

First pic is all 1981 and earlier.
Second pic is 1982 and later.
Final pic is all American.

Now I have to go through all the pre 81's to look for the good stuff! I'm optimistic because there was a lot of 50's and 60's. I'll keep you up to date on what I find!

Thanks shaft! In the past I've considered getting 200 .999's out of a box "good". There was well over 1000 of them in this box!

I've combed through them now, and discovered a 1964XWL, 1947 maple leaf, and a 1953 SF Near! I also have a possible 1965 LB, but I'm not going to get to excited until I get a better magnifier.

woah nice score! I only have one 99.9% (a 1981). Also, with the US nickels check them for dates pre-1960 and for the silver war ones (1942-45)

Thanks Jango, I really had no clue where to start with these American ones.
Here's what I pulled, maybe someone could be so kind as to tell me if I have anything exciting!
1940,1941,1942,1947,1954-1959

Do all the War Nickels contain silver? Or is there a mint mark to look for?

Ok the War Nickels (all have 35% silver) have a big mint mark (P for Philadephia, D for Denver, S for San Fransisco) above Monticello on the reverse. So check the '42 (this is the only date when both copper-nickel and silver War Nickels were made). Generally, the War Nickels will be a little darker than other nickels (can't remember why) in circulated condition

the pre 60 American nickels are usually what collectors down here hold onto
no real reason for this other then age
not rare, not worth a premium, just old and one day maybe worth something
The silver ones are what jangofett described and it seems like you didn't find any of those
the mint marks of the non silver nickels if they have one will be on the reverse of the coin next to the building
(Monticello) on the right hand side
S=san francisco
D=denver
no mintmark= philadelphia
great haul, always cool to see what you guys up north are pullin
