Just curious if anyone on here has found any of the strike it rich coins I've read and heard so much about. I've been coin roll hunting for the past few months and have found a good amount of old and foreign coins but no doubled dies or broadstrikes, rotated dies, one of the infamous three legged Buffalo nickels or a...whatever the name of the error is where the die is struck onto the wrong planchet. But I'd like to know if anyone else has had better luck. Edited by epiphone805 04/28/2011 02:07 am

You have me beat, I've only been at it a couple of weeks. Any pointers for good finds from which denomination? Or recommendations? Starting next week the bank ordered me in some half dollars, we'll see where that goes.

I find a lot of pre 1964 nickels in rolls. Bank of America has yielded the best results after I got two rolls from Wells Fargo,Chase,First Bank(employees were asking me if I was looking for the three legged Buffalo nickel so they're obviously checking their rolls; I don't go there anymore)and Bank of America and in their rolls, I find an average of 2 or 3 silver nickels for every two or three rolls while all the other banks gave me all 2009-2010's in almost every one of theirs.

To both of you, and welcome to the forums in general...and to the wonderful world of coins. First off number one thing I have been conditioned to say to New Collectors. Do not, I repeat, do not...ever clean a coin. Now that, that is past. Onto your question. I believe a few members have found some pretty decent, as you describe, strike it rich coins. Though I am not sure the majority are in it for the "wealth" factor. But what I can suggest to both of you is get a RedBook, the new 2012 one is out, and is perfect for new collectors and roll hunters in determining what to look out for. There are also guides called Cherrypickers guides, but remember. Have fun. If you see a coin that catches you eye, it has a value you to you. And to the second poster, the halves, remember to keep anything 1970 and below! Also 2002 to present are all NIFC, or not intended for circulation. Enjoy!

Dang Shavill, I like you already :) Is there a way to PM on this forum? Or do I need to be here for a while?

If I have a bicentennial half dollar that doesn't have that dot between the dates, is that worth anything? Also is there such thing as a "deep cameo" or something for these?

wrestling_135 - PM's on this site use email, and I believe it can be used when you join.
epiphone805 - What is your interest in pre 1964 nickels? its the war time nickels (1942-1945) that contain silver

I just entered my 36th year of collecting Lincoln cents. I have not counted coin for coin how many I have been through, but I estimate around 1,400,000 altogether. Just in the past month I have been through nearly 400 rolls of wheat cents.
I have found a number of nice coins over the years, and can attest that they are still out there waiting to be found. In any given year enough coins are minted to produce enough varieties and errors to keep us all satisfied that the Mint does make mistakes and release their less than perfect product to the public.

*** Converted to Upper/Lower case by the Staff. Please avoid ALL-CAPS, it is considered YELLING. ***Keep at it! I have found 1994 DDR,s, 1995 DDO, 2006 doubled earlobe, 98,99,2000 Wide AM,s, 2004 DDR,s, two feather indian head/buffalo,s and a lot of minor and significant DDO,s and DDR,s The drawback is the time spent to find them. I have been through over a million coins since I started and i,m still looking! D.A.M

Nothing here in terms of great errors, but one of my favourites was my Booker T. Washington 1951 Commemorative half that I found in a roll of half dollars last year.

No, not what you'd call "millionaire makers", but during the current recession, my daughter has got me some good finds at the store she works at. Best so far was a lady that bought $10.00 worth of gas with a roll of halves, all Walkers. Also, she had one buy a pack of cigarettes, used a BU '76 40% Ike and a Proof '76 40% Ike as part of her Marlboro funds...lol

The TITLE of that book sells MILLIONS of copies I'm sure ! But, IMO, it's VERY misleading on the surface. The term " Strike it Rich" is ridiculous, in the sense that, after reading this book.....and with a little effort and knowledge, that you're going to be "rich". NOT GONNA HAPPEN ! Can you find some "rarities", or some "varieties", or some "errors" ? Of course one can.......maybe even a coin or two, once in a blue moon, that might be worth $100.00 to $200.00 bucks ! But "rich" ? .......yeah.... NOT ! .... Of course there are always the "exceptions" to the rule.......but for the masses....... uhh uhh ! Those who roll search like FANATICS ON CRACK, will have the best chances at REAL finds, but most will not do this. As long as one treats this book as simply a "learning tool" for educational purposes that will provide some new goals on different things to look for "in the wild" or even just purchase, that's fine.

I once hit a half dollar box that had over 30 rolls of 90% silver, but I've never found any one single coin worth more than $50. Sure there is always a chance you could find a 1992 cam or a 1886 nickel in a box, but if your roll searching for money the easiest thing to do is to pull copper pennies out of boxes. Literally any box of pennies you can make money off of. I find the best way of selling them is to list them two at a time, you can easily get $45 dollars a box on ebay with the current price of copper now. -XoG
