Hi there!

I've finally managed to establish my web page about coins with platypuses depicted on them. There are first entries there and next ones will appear soon. Unfortunately there is no English version available now (I plan one once I'm finished with entering info about coins I know about). Of course there's always a possibility to use the Google translator, however it makes funny mistakes, e.g. it translates "coins on which platypuses appear" as "coins that appear in the platypus".

The address is: http://dziobaki.blogspot.com

What I'd like to know is: have I identified all world coins with platypuses? I'm pretty sure I know about all Australian ones, but how about other countries? I present a comprehensive list below; if you know about any coin with a platypus that is not listed there, please let me know!

  • Standard Australian 20 cent with its numerous versions, variants and errors.
  • 1988 Isle of Man "Bicentenary of Australia" 1 crown (a few versions).
  • 1990 Australian "Pride of Australia" $200, proof and unc.
  • 1998 Cook Islands "Australian fauna - platypus" $1.
  • 1999 Gibraltar "Olympics - Sydney" 1 crown (3 versions).
  • 2000 Australian "Platypus and water lily" $5.
  • 2001 Australian "Evolution of Calendar" $10.
  • 2005 Australian "Commonwealth Games" $0.50 (a few versions).
  • 2007 Australian "Discover Australia - platypus" $5, $15 and $50.
  • 2008 Australian "Young Collectors platypus" $1.
  • 2009 Australian "Little Dinkums - Petey Platypus" - $5.
  • 2009 Australian "1966 pattern" $0.05.
  • 2009 British Virgin Islands "Olympic Rings - Australia & Oceania" $5 x2 and $75.
  • 2010 Australian "Silver Dreaming - platypus" $1.
  • 2010 Australian "Gold Dreaming - platypus" $5, $15 and $50.
  • 2010 Australian "Platinum Dreaming - platypus" $15 and $50..
  • 2010 Niue Island "Ornithorhynchus anatinus" $1.
  • 2011 Australian "Australian platypus" $100.

Any more

Very impressive list - don't think I know any other coins that feature the playtpus. I'm quite surprised with other world coins featuring it. Thanks for showing and your research!

By the way I'm not so sure what to think about this coin (Australian Holey Dollar, 1990):

The long creature above "ONE" it's probably a fish. Or is it a platypus?

from a description of the coins on the KJC website:

Quote:
The Holey Dollar contains 1oz of fine silver and depicts men hunting barramundi and garfish from a branch overhanging a billabong, The Dump contains 1/4oz of fine silver and depicts three dancing mimi women.

So they're fish, not platypuses.

Thanks Sap, KJC is the second source stating that the creatures are barramundi and garfish so I guess it's either an official info or something generally agreed upon. So the issue of Australian coins is closed for me, I hope.

Btw - I search through various "Olympic" coins now as platypuses appear sometimes on ones representing Australia (like 1999 Gibraltar or 2009 BVI coins).

I just love platypuses. Why - it is a long and quite a complicated story.

So taking into account that I am really interested in platypuses and that I collect coins it is easy to find out that coins depicting platypuses are the intersection of my interests.
Rest in Peace

I could afford SCWC. Maybe I'll even be able to buy a downloadable pdf version...

But I think that the real problem are coins like "Evolution of calendar" - ones that have no mention in their descriptions that they have a platypus as a part of their design.

Another entry to add to the list:
  • 2011 Australian Indigenous culture - platypus dreaming $1, $15, $25.

Sure, I have a few scientific books about them and from time to time I look for interesting articles in journals. They are really fascinating indeed. I hope to see one myself in the future but I'm not sure when I'll be able to visit Australia and Tasmania.
