Found this today. Is this a common error?

Welcome aboard roush.

I'm no LMC expert by far, but I've asked that same question for other Lincolns. I've at least learned that is MD ( Machine Doubling).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hard for me to tell by the photo, but I would say it's a plating issue or Die Deterioration.I don't see any MD or DD.

The lower SE corner of the mint mark is a fin caused by the punching of the mint mark. It raises in this area and often splits the plating during the strike. That is why that area usually shows the zinc in the EDS/MDS die states until the fin flattens.
On the post 1990 dies you do not see this anymore as the mint mark is part of the design not punched in making the fin.

I think hes referring to the date coop. It looks like the tail of the three has a split in it. Can plating issue cause that? If so I didnt know that.

The digits appear to be normal sized. Contact/coin wrapping can affect the date area probably most of the times. Why? Probably cause we look there first.
