I've searched and can't seem to locate an explanation for this coin variety - "Micro D". I've looked at my 1881H and compared against photos of the 'micro', but these old eyes are just not what they use to be. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It is a badly re-punched D over D in DEI. The re-punched D is so low in relation to the first D that it looks like a minature D inside a regular D. The engraver must have been having a bad morning when he struck the manual punch.

They had just discovered a letter describing how to build and run a fractional distillation still the night before. Through some miracle they achieved 192 Proof right off the bat. The morning after was a problem however.

In all seriousness I'm sure someone must have gotten yelled at over that. I mean they could cut precision gearing for a watch with common tools from that era, punching a die should have been relatively painless.
