elkslayer132 I hope you are right. When I saw what the ladybugs did I purchased 6 bumble bees. Now they sit here at home because they didn't skyrocket like I thought they would. It was my first time buying coins to flip. I didn't do so well. Lol. Lol.

The demand for the ladybug, IMHO, is partly due to the mintage difference between it and the bumblebee. I can see that people with the bumblebee but not the ladybug want to pair them up and thus drive up the price for the ladybug further.
If you haven't had a chance to look at the mint annual report yet, I think the exact mintage for the ladybug is 4,985, not 5,000. I don't know what happened to that 15. I'm very curious to find out.

It's to bad they didn't keep mintage lower for the bumble bee. Maybe I should do a Xmas special... Sell both my 2007 snowflakes with the 2 glass coins.... Then go on vacation.. Sounds good.

yes $50 is a good return, your not going to hit the jackpot with a coin like the ladybug to often you are better off with smaller profits and more turnover of coins it adds up quick.

I was actually reading the whole topic until I realised it is an old one, simply bumped. I have two of those, but not selling in the near future unfortunately. Too beautiful just to let it go. And btw, personally I think people should get her now if they don't have the ladybug, as the series will most probably continue and then that coin is possibly going to become close to the gulo gulo #1 coin in series and the original red back spider. Amazing coin to invest money in

If you look at ebay postings for sold lady bugs the price is dropping. It appears that those that wanted one got one

I'm bumping this old thread that contains as even earlier link because the LadyBug is often mentioned as an example of not-so popular NCLT that skyrocketed in value. In doing so I think it's also important to understand why that happened.
It was the first of series that laterproved very popular. As time passed, collectors jumped in at the 2nd, 3rd or even the 4th annual release over a time frame of 3 years. "New" purchasers created the price hike of the Ladybug when they later became interested in completing the entire series, considering the quantity of that earlier Ladybug was limited. Higher demand/limited supply = higher price.
If the Ladybug had been a standalone release, I don't believe it would be worth what it is today. And that it was the first of a series with low mintage wasn't really the key to its price hike -- it was the following annual releases that proved popular that kept it in the spotlight. Others many disagree.....
Mintage - 2011 Tulip with Ladybug 4,985 2012 Aster with Bumble Bee 9,991 2013 Purple Coneflower 9,992 2014 Waterlily and Leopard Frog 12,500

Thanks wildflower for interesting reading.
In that 2011 / 2012 it was different. Still not so much coins. 5000 for NCLT - very limited mintage. Yes, even now, the first in the series still could be popular, but the chances are low.
And nowdays, when the Glass series considered as finished - do not think, that someone looking for that Ladybug...

The coin is still bringing final selling prices of ~$900 USD and often attracts 20+ (if not 30+) bids. It definitely appears as if there is still a market for the coin.

ladybug will always be the top have to have coin in the series,, it is the first and lowest mintage,, people new to the hobby usually collect backwards, once they are hooked on something,, I know I would love to add one to my collection, as I started with the butterfly.. and would like a bee as well. but I can't justify the price now..and it is not if I could ever resell it, I just couldn't enjoy looking at it for that price..

I bought 5 of them when they were released. I sold one for about $650 when the price was going up and still have 4 of them.

Darryldarryl, you obviously made a very wise buying decision! I neglected to mention, after the end of the first series, then of course comes another series beginning with the 2016 Snail, mintage of 12,500. I think it's fair to say the new series, and the next and next? will likely serve to sustain future interest (and value) of the Ladybug for years to come. It was a unique happening - but was it by chance? I'm not convinced. Back in 2011 5,000 was an extremely low mintage but regardless, the Ladybug certainly proved to be a winner for RCM. Ever since it has served as the benchmark in the sense that it demonstrated not all coins drop in value.....even though since it was issued, hundreds if not almost a thousand different ones did.
