I recently purchased this penny from one of my customers. It is a 1952_D penny that is really thin. It is about a half a millimeter thick. and both sides images are proportionate to a regular penny. So this was not done post mint. It looks like the planchet was too small to start, but was just big enough to be the same circumference as a normal penny. really odd. I cant seem to find an error online like it. Maybe I haven't searched enough. Could anyone please tell me what this is?

It is PMD. It apprears to be either a sanded coin or an acid dipped coin. I can tell without closer images. But if the outside diameter is small than a normal cent, then it is acid dipped.

They put a cent in acid to reduce its size in chemistry class and would take the smaller sized cent to buy a soda (at that time 5-10 cent in a pop machine). You seem then back into circulation. But they were not minted that way.

I know this is an older post so I hope some one can answer. Why do people dip coins in acid? Is it a certain type of acid and, is it the chemical reaction they want. How does it help the coin?
Earle42, H2NO3 = Hydrogen Peroxide? I'm not sure how to read on Periodic Table.

In the 1960's and earlier, in chemistry class Cents were placed in sulfric acid. This would make the coin thinner and narrower. Then they would spend it for a soda that cost 10 cents at that time. If you found a 7 cent machine (7 oz. bottles)then you would get change back. Thus why you find these in circulation.

I remember when I was growing up they would advertise Tarn-X on TV and how instantly pretty it made copper look in seconds. I always wanted to get some for my wheaties and "make them purdy" again, but luckily my parents never bought any.

I wonder what those coins look like today that did.

HNO3 is Nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide is H2O2

Biokemist6, RollHunter and All, thanks. I'm new to this so my questions may seem endless. Here is another.
Biokemist6, how do you make the Quote appear in a box or rectangle like you did on your reply? I have a Mac so it may be different to do it.

This doesn't work on this link because the first bracket is turned wrong on purpose to show all you need to do.

Remember this formula: left bracket quote right bracket message left bracket /quote right bracket.
