I've been experimenting with photographing proof coins. This is what I've come up with so far. Please be my critics, any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

First response for these pics is Wow!

Since I have not been looking at coins online a lot, I do not know what sort of "standard" there is to what makes a "good looking" pic of a proof. But overall impact of this, to me, it that you have a good setup.

One minor issue. On the back of Kennedy's head and neck is what looks like a reddish cast. It seems to diffuse through some areas of the head. The same condition on the REV on "DOLLAR," and up into the eagle's wings.

I hope this helps...

With a coin like that you may want to turn the flash off...that is a lot of bling!

This was taken without a flash. I have a light box setup with two lights, one on each side staggered.

I see this gentleman has the same 'problem' as I do, if this is a problem.

I am so scared to try anything so I just leave my coins alone.

It is all over the face of the coin, but if you look around the words "In God We Trust' you will see what LOOKS like dust specks. Are they? And what's the best way to get rid of them?

An answer to that would be great!

Well, whatever you do don't use canned air to blow the dust off! Most of the canned air products I've used spray a residue, and who knows what it will do to the coin surfaces long term?

I use a photographic duster to blow small specs of dust from the coin surfaces. If the dust doesn't come off, I use an LP anti-static gun and then blow the surface again. I like the Giotto Rocket Duster best. You need to be careful to hold raw coins when you blow on them to avoid launching them onto the floor! ...Ray
