I was trying to attribut this 1879 Morgan and had a hard time figuring the difference between VAM 3 and VAM 27. Both have the doubling of 879. Is it the location of the doubling or what. No other markers or attribution points found except the filled G.

I think its VAM 27, any help? Thanks

Yeah, it's the specific location of the doubling which makes the difference. I kinda like 27 for this one, too.

Ok, a little off topic, but how did you take such close up pics? Do you have special equipment, or could you explain your set up. I can only scan my coins, and doubling is hard to determine. Thanks, mike

Its not easy Kempire. I take numerous shots through a 10x loupe, sometimes my 20x loupe. With the zoom almost all the way extended. Important thing is to have the spot on the coin I want the photo of, centered in the loop because of the point of focus. Hard thing is to be very still. That means holding the loop in my left hand and the camera in my right very steady and usually braced against my desk.

Mine is a very low level setup. Nothing fancy.

The coin is either flat or propped against something, again depending on what I'm shooting and what angle is best to capture it.

I use an older Sony 5 megapixal 4x optical zoom camera. During the many shots I take I also adjust and reposition my light so I have different angles to select from. Then I upload to my computor, deleting the bad ones, of which there are many. The ones I keep, I edit by cropping out everything I don't want in the photo. The only thing I want to show in the photo is the specific area of interest, like the doubled area. Everything else is out of focus anyway. Good luck and hope this helps.
