These Franklin halves are mint..but were stored for years behind unsafe acetate(now removed to flips). the unsightly speckle and black discoloration has ruined the look I think. This is not honest dirt. Is there anything to be done about it?

There are many schools of thought regarding the removal of this type toning, i.e., "unattractive". Organic solvents that remove only surface contaminants and don't react to the metal (acetone) will not touch this metal oxidation. To remove it you must also remove a thin layer of the metal. I would highly recommend a novice not attempt this with rare/valuable pieces ... better to send it to a conservator. For more common pieces, I have no problem with a quick swish in EZ-Est (one ping only, Vasily) and then a quick and thorough H20 rinse and blow dry. Repeating this process will dull the luster and make it evident that the coin was "over-dipped".

Soon there will be others who stop by to condemn this recommendation and tell you "NEVER" clean a coin. I have used this with Uncirculated Silver American Eagles to remove ugly black spot-toning. It was a quick swish and immediate thorough rinse and dry. The black spots were gone and I could not see any diminished luster. They have been in airtite holders for a couple of years now and the spots are still gone and there is no dulling of the luster. As I said you must be selective on which coins to dip and limit the frequency. Since you removed these from the cello they have not been previously dipped. They are not overly rare or unique, so the final choice is yours.

If you do decide to dip them, according to CCF law you must take pictures before and after and post your results.

Thanks for that info. Very useful. The more valuable pieces I will go to a conservator.

those should be dipped because it wont have any effect on the value raw.

This is directed to 'SeatedNut'. I think I am going to try to get the speckle off some cheaper coins. You said in your description this: "I have no problem with a quick swish in EZ-Est (one ping only, Vasily) and then a quick and thorough H20 rinse and blow dry.".. what does 'one ping only, Vasily' mean?
is one ping mean a quick dip? what does Vasily mean?
Thanks for your input. I have taken 'before shots' and when I am done...the after.
