well the 50mm and the 18-55mm stock lens on the T1i wasn't doing what I wanted very well so I went and got a 100mm f/2.8 lens and I have to say I am very impressed. This is fully automatic everything and its a million times better than the other lens's I had

here is a picture of the same coin(not the coin above, but the same coin with both lenses) shot with same settings, one with the 50mm and one with the 100mm lens, maybe you can see the difference in them 50mm 100mm

I see a HUGE difference in the two pictures. The 100mm looks great!

Great pix Bryan, both of them and yes I can see a big difference in the 2 lenses. Better be careful though. Think Anna's going to get embarrassed if you get any closer ! Which one would you say most closely looks like the coin as held in hand? Congrats on the new lens.

sidekick-CA I had to raise the tripod to even get the Morgan to fit in the viewfinder because this lens makes it look so close. The picture with the 100mm lens looks almost exactly like it. This is a picture I had taken with the JVC a couple years ago. It does have PL fields and marked MS-63 CameoPL by ANACS Here is a picture of a dandelion I just for the heck of it

This last pic certainly does show what a difference a DSLR can make. Not on the same planet. I ran into the same problem having to raise the copy stand once I put on that macro extension tube. Actually I still can't get it high enough to get the whole coin in. Having to get a better stand. I'd love to get one of those 100mm lenses but just can't spring for it right now. Hope you got a good price on it. Automatic everything sounds nice.

Thats great! The 100 gives you better options for lighting! More room to get the light right above the coin... I just ordered extension tubes that should be getting here shortly and letting me do the same/similar idea! Great photos!

Quote: Hope you got a good price on it From what I have seen I got a great price, I got it from a guy on Craigslist. I put up a WTB ad thinking it would take a while for someone to actually want to get rid of one and I could replenish some funds during that waiting period. This guy emailed me saying he had one and wanted 400.00 for it (which was a good price) but all I had was $375.00 that I could really spend, and even at that it would be tight by my next check. I really didn't expect him to accept the 375.00 but he said that would be fine and I called and talked to him on the phone. Found out he lived in Raleigh which is about a 4 hour drive but offered to meet me half way. I figured it was worth the trip and brought my gun plus a passenger with me just in case and figured the worst thing that could happen was I would have made the trip for nothing if he didn't show up. Well he did was was super nice guy, we got to talking and he let me check out his Canon EOS 6D and even take some pictures with the lens before I gave him the money. So I got it for $375.00 and about a 3 hour ride (both ways)down I-85 (about a quarter tank of gas) so I think it was a pretty good deal. Thing about it he told me if he had known I had the 50mm lens that I got with the camera he would have given me $75.00 for it if I had brought it (all I brought was my body)but oh well. I will probably never use the 50mm lens and would have been a great deal for 300.00 plus a lens I probably will not use again but still happy with the price either way

First, I think, in this day and age, I'm glad to see people are thinking. 1.) Ya got a bud to watch your back. 2) You got your CLOSE bud to have your back. Both options are needed anymore for just about anything.
But, I cringed (again) when I got don to your last line. I always do when I hear this. You said:
"I will probably never use the 50mm lens and would have been a great deal for 300.00 plus a lens I probably will not use again but still happy with the price either way."
That's a bit sad to me. some of my best landscape shots and portrait shots, came from a stock 50mm. The guy knew what he was talking about.
HE probably has a shelf full of 50mm sitting around the house knowing someday someone will want a 50mm back and he will make some money.
Yeah, I like my zooms and all, but the 50mm for static shots just cannot be beat.
I may be flogging that old, dead horse or even opening up some old wounds, but I believe in my 50mm's.
Try em. Use em. See what ya get!

Great results! A longer focal length probably reduces reflections and shadows on the coin too.
