Back in 1970 I was sorting some quarters from a vending machine and heard what sounded like silver. However, there was no silver quarter in the batch. I finally found out what I was hearing was a quarter that was very thin. It appears that a somehow some planchets for quarters were punched out of sheets intended for making dimes. evidently there were some released to the banks in my area b/c I found about 7 of them back then and put them away.

Technically what is the name of this type of error? These were not struck on dime planchets - their planchets were not punched from quarter-intended metal.

Is there a special value to these for collectors?

Red Book calls it a wrong metals error but only lists a silver quarter on a dime planchet and it lists for $2,500.00.You can find this kind of error on e-Bay.

It is a wrong stock error. In this case, dime stock was used to punch out quarter blanks. The 1970 D quarter struck on dime stock is one of the most common examples of this. Typically I see them bring in the $15-$25 range depending on condition.
