Hello group
I was just enhancing my coin knowledge when I came across an article about the you S Mint and Cheerios got together and placed 5,500 Special 2000 Sacagawea dollars in Cheerios as a promotion. It states that the tarnish is special and the strike was of the first strike.
Does anyone here know about these coins and do they have any value?
Thanks Big Ed

A Cheerios dollar has really detailed tail feathers on the eagle on the reverse, and the finish is slightly different from the circulation coin. Apparently most were spent accounting for their expense and rarity in mint state.

The Cheerios Sacagawea was essentially a pattern coin and it has a slighty different design(ribbed tail feathers vs smooth) from Sacagaweas minted for commerce. It was recently discovered that not all of the Sackies used in the Cheerios promotion were of the pattern type, many of them could very well have been normal coins. Because of that, potential population figures have been thrown out the window and it is really a guess at this point as to how many actually exist. Only about a dozen have been discovered and as far as I know, none have been reported to have been found in circulation. I would imagine that there are still some in the Cheerios packaging sitting at the bottom of someone's junk drawer were the coin was placed 11 years ago after a box of empty cereal. If you were lucky enough to find the proverbial needle in a hay field(a stack is much too small for this task), then it would be worth around $5000.

That is some good info. I did see that they package a penny and a dollar on one cellophane packet.
Also I was reading that there are 5000 special Goodacre Sacagawea dollars that have a special tarnish added to them?
This hobby is full of education.
Thanks Big ed

I have some information on the 2000p Cheerios Sacagawea dollar. General Mills and the us mint agreed to promote sacagawea and the Lincoln Penny 1million pennys were stamped and shipped out in 1million boxes of cheerios. 5500 Sacagaweas were sent out among the
1million boxes. At the Philadelphia mint acording to the article I read 126 sacagaweas were stamped with a different planchet. They were over looked and went out with the 5500. 5374 of the dollars had the
tail feathers with the visible veins in them. The 126 have just a
bold tail feather no veins. These are the ones that I have seen that
have sold for as much as 34,000 dollars mint condition (2009 auction)
23,000 dollars (2007 auction) According to the article these are the ones that are in high demand. I am in possesion of one of these coins although it is not in mint

This is a Very sad but True story.
I found one in our Cheerios. I thought I was around 10 when this happened but looks like I was 20, I thought ever box had a dollar in it. So thinking I'll get one in my next box of Cheerios I spent it on a candy bar. Snickers to be exact. So I know for a fact ones out their, or was in circulation. I spent it at the Quick Check on River Rd. Piscataway NJ 08854. You should of heard me when the next box didn't have anything in it, And I realized what I had.
I remember finding it, Ohh cool a free dollar.

At least one piece with the pattern reverse has been recovered from circulation.

Special finish not special tarnish.
