I'm doing a "pick and choose" on submitting my annual five beauts to NGC for "free" grading and need opinions on this 1909 VDB Lincoln Cent. It's a real blinging beauty but has two carbon dots on the obverse. I would really appreciate your inputs on whether it's worth burning one of the submissions on this coin. As an aside, it's much more striking (pardon the pun) than a slabbed MS-64 I already have from them. Thanks in advance. Paleoguy

I would probably call it a MS-64 due to the carbon spots being fairly prominent. It also has a few marks under "Trust" and some other spotting on the obverse around 9 o'clock. Saying that, I don't think it's worth it to get slabbed as it really is a $30 to $40 coin.

I guess the question comes down to what coin would it bump out if you were to send this one in to be slabbed?

with Awesome Wally. However, Coin Values gives a 1909 V.D.B. a value of $75 at MS64RB, just for thought.

Nice coin paleo, belongs in your 7070 instead of junk plastic. I agree with everyone that it has a shot at 64RB, but the carbon spot is so distracting that a technical grader might subtract a point or two just because it's in the prime focal area. Your eye just goes right to it. Had it been as minor as the spots at 2:00 & 8:00, the coin is an easy 64 since the reverse is near gem. Great collectible coin otherwise. If you have another alternate, I'd go with that.

I already have a 64RB in my 7070 with a lot more glow, but less shine. I think this one is destined for ebay. Thanks all for your inputs!

So, in the end, you will be slabbing this one, to enhance the ebay sale?

That is one beautiful coin, and if the grading is free, why not send it in, unless you have something better to submit.

Well, I already have a 64RB and I was hoping to one up it with this one, but consensus dictates no.... So ebay it will be. I'm sending in some guduns (18/7-D Buff, 3-legged Buff, 22 No Date - strong rev) so was trying to round out the submission with some final bits and pieces. I appreciate everyone's help/opinion. P.

I wouldn't slab it, not worth it...I think they might 63 it.
