No doubt that silver coins have become a lot more scarce in boxes of late. When you factor in time (pick up, dumping and searching), the cost of gas and the hassle of dumping, buying is more economically feasible.

I still look because there still is that obscure chance of finding some. Besides, it is fun to search and you never know what else you can find other than silver!

That's why I only grab them on the way home, and I like talking to the tellers and they usually show me the wierd stuff they find and ask for my take on it. Plus, one lady at one branch gives me the silver she finds.

I haven't got any boxes lately, but there has been a lot turning up at the convenience stores and banks here lately. Walked into the bank today to deposit my check, looked at the tellers change tray and there it was staring me right in the face. I asked the teller to break a 20 for me, I asked for 19 dollars, 2 quarters and 5 dimes. Luckily the silver was 3rd from the top. 1962 silver dime.

I ordered a couple of boxes of halves for this coming week. Like ancientcoinguy said, there's always a chance that some will be there.

Finds for me are the same as they were 3 years ago, and better than my finds in 1979-80, (although as a teen I had less cash to spend then crh'ing). My finds this year are 172 silver pieces in $13,000 searched, cwr's, because boxes have always been lousy for me.

Had to be, just look at how many websites, youtube videos and articles there are now on the subject. Besides registered members viewing these forums imagine the thousands of "surfers" or "prowlers" that are reading your "success" stories and you create a silver rush. Years ago, no one was doing it in my area now every bank has several "regulars" picking up boxes. I don't even bother now, I had enough fun back when the pickings were great. But for those of you that are still finding stuff "keep on trucking" as long as you can.

I went through a box of halves this weekend. Found: two 1969's, a 1967, a 2001S, and several newer NIFC coins, that was to be my last box, as I just got done going through two or three boxes, finding nothing. Still, just as exciting (to me anyway), was getting a 1964 quarter in change Saturday night. I wish I knew how to find CWR's, no bank or CU that I know of will have anything to do with those. I do like the the smaller independent banks that wrap the coinage people bring in, and would like to open account at one.

I search all coin types, on average I find one silver coin every three boxes. Anyone doing better than this for a longterm average? I know once in a while you find one box with 3 silver coins, and we always remember that one, but don't forget about the 3 boxes that had nothing in them at all.

I don't even try. I live in a town of 40k. I personally know of 10 roll searchers that go to every bank, every day, and ask for rolls of halves. And if they don't have halves, they search rolls of Quarters, or Dimes. I know one of the Bank Managers and she told me that they are now refusing to order boxes of halves UNLESS you are a business and promise you will keep them! She told me a lot of the banks are adopting a similar police, especially to non-account holders. On the other hand when my son bought a Kennedy Dansco; he went to our bank and told them why he wanted rolls of halves, well they actually went out of their way to help him ( he's 16). He started out with 4 rolls and every week he takes in two full rolls and swaps for two more. One of the tellers actually keeps her eyes out for the newer, and harder to find dates for him! As an amusing aside, the tellers in our bank are so frustrated with the roll searchers, that a few weeks ago my son called me while at the banking making his weekly "deposit". It seemed they had received 10 rolls from a customer that were "interesting". When I got there I found that all were full of silver. The Bank Manager told me that the Tellers were fighting over them and it was creating a morale problem. BUT they did not want to hand them out to a Roll searcher for fear that it would only ignite another feeding frenzy. Thats when they remembered "the Kid", and decided to offer them to my son. The only stipulation was that he keep it quiet!

Several people are saying that silver is being pulled by the boxing companies. I don't have any reason to doubt them since it probably wouldn't be too difficult yet I found a 5er in a box last week. On the other hand based on my other finds the rate in boxes should definitely be much higher. Maybe the Brinks people are having a laugh at us spiking an occasional box to make us waste time?

Those are some good eyes...typically BofA keeps their trays in locked drawers so no go with that...

I started searching halves recently. I've gone through 8 boxes now. I keep all the silver and NIFC. Out of the 8 boxes, 7 yielded at least one NIFC and one of them had a 40%. My 4th box though - that was the one that will keep me in the game for a while. 11 silver Kennedy's - 2 @ 90% and 9 @ 40%. I don't know why it had so much - they didn't look like a collection that got dumped (they were all pretty well circulated).
I think the only reason Wells orders me a box a week is because they know I won't bring it back to them. For about a year now, I've been getting 2 boxes of pennies and 1 box of nickels every week. It's only been the past couple of months I've been getting halves.

I don't actively search specifically for silver, but for whgat it's worth, I bought a customer-wrapped roll of Kennedys from a local bank the other day and found a 69-D in it, also recently (about a month ago I think) actually got a 1954-D Roosevelt dime in change from a vending machine. My daughter also showed me a 1964-D Washington quarter that she picked up somewhere. I really think that many people nowadays do not realize that "older" coins like that have silver, especially 65-70 Kennedy halves.
