I got back last week from a trip to Los Angeles with my wife & my brother. The original plan included a trip to Carson City to see the old mint & general sightseeing. Unfortunately, that part of the trip got shelved and instead we went to Yosemite, which was just awesome with all the waterfalls in full force. We stayed there for 4 days of hiking & exploring then back to LA for my father-in-law's 83rd birthday. While out there. we went to several antique shops. We went in one shop and saw a lot of beautiful items but felt that everything was pretty over-priced. I saw nothing of interest until I went in one booth and noticed at the bottom of a display case the following Morgan dollar in a GSA case:

There was no price on it, so I called one of the employees over to find out how much it was. He said he'd have to call the owner to find out. Based on the prices we'd seen at this shop, I was figuring it would be in the $700 range. He came back a few minutes later and said, "Well it's kind of expensive - it's $125. Is that in line with what you'd expect? It's only a one dollar coin." (Clearly not a collector.) I resisted the urge to grab it immediately and instead said, "It's in the ballpark but a bit high. Do you think he'd go down to $110?" He said that was no problem, so I got it for $110 plus tax!

I felt that was a nice consolation prize for not visiting Carson City and a much better bargain.

Holy wow! Awesome! Every antique place around me isn't necessarily educated in the value of coins, but they make up for it with ridiculous mark ups!

Yeah, it's been my experience that if an antique store / dealer / cube has a large amount of coins, they are generally overpriced even if the dealer isn't educated. When you find a dealer that normally doesn't have any with one or two, that's where the bargains can be found. On the same trip out there, I saw a .999 one ounce silver round listed at $30 with a 20% discount to boot! Needless to say, I snatched that one up too.

Antique ahops and flea markest can be a great source of very good buys. There is always the one seller who does not know what he/she has and it's always nice to be the one to find them.

Junior, yes it had both the box and COA. I would have taken it without either one though.
