Hello,

I eventually do need the final grade on this nickel but I first I need to find out what is going on with the reverse side insofar as the apparent cracks.

Do these marks (PMD?) detract from the overall grade or add to it in terms of rarity etc...?

Thanks much for the help.

I don't think this is PMD - it looks like a lamination error - but I am not an error expert.

a few questions:

1) If it is an error, does this particular lamination error command a premium?

2) If it is a lamination error, what average % above the same graded non-error coin would the value of this coin be?

3) What would the grade be of this coin in its current state?

It is a lamination but I would not consider it an error(a term that implies added value and rarity), just poor workmanship. It has nothing to do with the dies, a lamination is just an internal flaw in the planchet metal stock. Laminations like that one almost always devalue a coin simply because it looks like ugly damage, collectors want the best possible example and that would be one without a lamination.

Massive laminations/delaminations should be considered an error because, unlike small laminations, the big ones tend to be quite uncommon and very dramatic. Your nickel is an easy EF, maybe sneaking into AU if it has some luster left.

laminations are fairly common with nickels, since it is a very hard metal. I've never seen a Buffalo with that much of a motheaten area to the rear of its hump, however-kinda cool, but probably no more valuable. I wouldn't downgrade it for that either, unless you're trying to put a set together of similar looking coins. I call this an XF-40.
