Have been looking at the stats on this quarter and wondering how under rated some of you think it may be ... if at all. Trends well under the 1927 until EF grades even though pop reports show fewer coins graded in each grade.

The stated mintage is 597k compared with 468k for the 27 and 242k for the 1915. Distribution on ebay sales seems to follow the mintages so wondering if the pop reports don't reflect the same because fewer people decide its worth sending the 1921 because it is valued less?

I just managed to fill this spot in my collection and meanwhile have a few 1915's and 2 1927's. Might just be my imagination that the 1921 was tougher to find in a decent grade.

Thoughts appreciated.

I bought a 1921 in EF recently and was wondering the same thing.I was upgrading my GeoV's to EF,had no trouble finding 1927's for well below trends,1915 was no problem to find a nice one as long I was willing to pay close to trends, but the 1921 eluded me for a while.Trends has the '21 priced higher than the '27 in higher grades,I think it should be valued higher in all grades down to F.

Marjonbc, you are either a mind reader or you were standing behind me this morning while I was on the phone conversing with a collector friend about this exact TOPIC! The elusive 1921 Canada quarter. In our conversation, we both concur that the '21 quarter dollar (as the Yanks would call it) is brutally RARE in grades above VG-8
We've been collecting for appr. 10 years each and with our combined hunt for the '21 quarter over the years, I've managed to acquire a nice I.C.C.S., EF-45 example and my friend has a raw AU-50 example.
The I.C.C.S. 2010, Population Report states they have a whopping 340 circulated examples and a mere 30 Unc.'s out there.
Someone must be hoarding 'em all or it's a dozen coins being re-submitted many times over? I feel this is a highly underrated coin and is one of my most frustrating to acquire in high grade. Greg Jones, owner of Lighthouse Numismatics currently has a P.C.G.S., MS-62 example for sale, however, I don't feel it is beyond an AU-55. (at least according to I.C.C.S. standards) I'm currently attempting to MS-64 my entire King George V quarter collection (all I.C.C.S.) and I'm currently 70% complete at said grade. One of my favourite series by the way!

I suspect the scarcity of 1921 quarters has nothing to do with hoarding, but possibly due to an unpublicized melt by the Canadian mint. The melt of 1921 5 cent and 50 cent coins is well known. I theorize they made more 1921 quarters than was needed by the banks at the time and they decided to melt a large quantity of them, albeit not to the extent of 5 cent and 50 cent coins.

Well at least I am not alone in wondering. I found what should be a nice one (auction house has it rated AU) but I had to sift through hundreds of web pages and dozens of sites to find one that looked good and was not an arm and a leg. Should be here in a week to 10 days I hope.... found it across the pond. In a recent trip south to the Money Show in Sacramento I had a chance to stop at a lot of shops along the way. I saw a number of mid to lower grade 1915 and 1927 but not one 1921. There might be something to the melt theory.

What 1945V states regarding the meltdown of the '21 quarter makes a lot of sense. If the mint chose to meltdown the nickels and halves of that specific year who knows what they may have done to the quarters?
There certainly is something weird about the availability of the '21 quarter if I've heard soo many complaints by collectors (myself included) about acquiring decent example.
The same goes for the 1920 half dollar, try finding a mintstate example||

I also noticed it was tough to find. That said, the 1915 and 1927 are also very difficult to find in EF if you are holding out for one with really nice eye appeal.
