Here is an interesting quarter that is damaged, painted, yet people bid above face value for this and clearly the seller will take a loss on this auction, unless it happens to end at a few dollars.

i highly doubt a 13 year old will think that is an "error"

trust me. 7th graders should be more educated than that(i would know, I am in 7th, LOL).

by the way...
why are so many pre 65 junk coins painted red?
I mean, I have probably seen 50 or so in the last 10 years, all out of completely different lots from all over the place. The red appears to be about the same shade and type of paint.
Did some dealer once upon a time paint all their junk silver red or something? With the number I've seen, there must be tens of thousands of those coins around!

It probably does not explain all painted quarters floating around but I have seen bar owners paint/dye house quarters for use in the juke box. When the change is emptied, the bartender can then retrieve the house quarters for later use to liven up a slow night.

A lot of these painted quarters came from arcades back in the day as well.
