Hi everyone,
First I'd like to say "Sorry for the long absence". Things fell apart at work and just lately got back on-line.
Now to the two pennies I've have been lucky enough to find. I know their errors, just not sure what kind. I was hoping that one of you could help me out. I got this mixed in with some pocket change (I've actually had them awhile now).
First is the 1987-D full front picture. I didn't notice until I was looking at the picture.
If you look at the "In God We Trust", it starts off the normal thickness but tapers off in the word "Trust".

Then if you look at the date it appears that the "987 D" are shadowed (or stretched for a better word).

And finally the 1960-D (be warned it's seen some life), again the "In God We Trust" along with the 1 and 0 in the date appears to be worn away. I thought it was just wear, but I noticed the rim and the area around Lincoln are fine. The numbers 1 and 0 in the date are there, but are so faint you need an eyepiece to see them. I'm thinking it's an over polished die.

Sorry for the pictures, I hope you can see the areas I had described. Thanks for the help.

looks like a weak strike or some metal stuck in the die whaen minting and prevented it from making the full letters

Hi Empfan - The first cent, the 1987-D, is what they call Die Deterioration Doubling, a common effect when a die has been extended in use past its original intent. It is similar to Mechanical Doubling and NOT considered to be a doubled die.

The second cent, the 1960-D, can be caused by either a clogged die or an under pressure strike. If it is an under pressure strike, the reverse should show some of the same affects as the obverse, if not, then it is more than likely a clogged die that is in need of cleaning.

Hope that this helps.

Umm, the second cent is a 1969D, not a 1960D. I can tell by the design of the bust and the shape of the 6 and 9.

Thank you very much for the replies. I had the feeling that the 1969-D (as Coppercoins pointed out, thank you) was either an over polished or a clogged die. As for the 1987-D, I didn't know what was going on with it.
I'm not familiar with double dies whether mechanical or not. I keep an eye out for them and other things, but I never really thought I'd find something; so I never took the time to learn about them.
Thanks again .

Sharp eyes Chuck, you are right. I glossed right over the fact that it was a 1969-D. You can also tell the difference by the word LIBERTY.
