So I've been reading on here about searching rolls and such. Going to the bank requesting rolls and so on. Does anyone employ any particular strategy in doing this? What are your goals and expectations? Do you focus on a particular denomination? Or are you overall just playing the 'lottery' as it were just randomly picking a denomination and hoping to find something significant?

I currently search nickels and pennies. Just looking for anything that fills a hole or upgrades my circulation sets.

Doesn't matter what denomination or what you're looking for (I suggest experimenting a bit) the only strategy to roll searching is volume. Look through as many rolls as you can - eventually you'll find something fun.

I normally search pennies. Get bored then switch to nickels. The nickel below is an error coin I found roll searching. But lately I have been doing halves. I hadn't started my Kennedy set yet, and with all the miners going through them, I figured I better get on the ball. As far as "playing the lottery" goes, that's exactly what roll searching is no matter what denomination. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't. You will find something, you just have to look hard and long enough. I don't search dimes because I don't collect Roosevelts, and too slim of a chance at finding Mercurys. I don't search quarters anymore, because I threw in the towel after the territories. The small dollars, I have to wait for them to be released. As far as specifically what I'm looking for is hole fillers and upgrades to my collections. But while I'm doing that, I am also keeping an eye out for varieties, errors, and low mintage coins. If you collect Lincoln cents, I would suggest giving those a shot first. They are cheaper and easier to get and to dump. If you decide to do halves, you will probably have to have your bank order them for you.

I do pennies and my grandchildren have joined in on the fun. My grandson is hooked on it now. He was even excited to complete a roll of 2011's. Easy and inexpensive way to get kids involves

Pennies through quarters for me. I switch between them when I get bored or tired of looking at a certain one.

My method is to just walk in and ask, no better way. I just search a little here and there. My finds are all from customer rolls, no boxes.

I just do nickels ever since I bought a box of pennies and found three wheats out of 1250 pennies. I've had a lot of luck with nickels from BofA: Lots of silvers, a 1936 Buffalo nickel in excellent condition and even an 1899 Liberty Head five cent piece.

I search pennies, nickels, and dimes in order to fill holes in my collection and find some LWC.

Depends on amount of cash you have to play with. I liked half dollars because it seemed to have better odds of finding a silver AND each silver half (90%)is worth 5 times that of a silver dime!

Yeah, I kinda had that in the back of my mind. As I read the responses today I realized that finding silver was a possibility. I'm a bit picky about my coins so as I thought about the 'strategy' I realized that finding silver and error coins would be probably my main endevours in roll searching.
