I was out coin shopping today, and at the third coin shop
I saw this nickel laying there, the flip said

Jefferson nickel 1944
no mint mark

I looked at it and knew what it was right away.
Has just the right "R" in PLURIBUS

I never thought I would run across one of these,
so I have not paid attention to what they are worth.

I am thinking maybe VG condition.

Has anyone been buying any Henning nickels, if so
could you let me know what they are selling for.
I am hoping I did not pay to much.

I bought a 1860 O Seated dollar at the shop before this
one, and am feeling the pain of coin buying.

I can't believe the coins I am finding lately. Another
shop is holding a 1997 Botanic Garden set, with the
1997 matte proof nickel, working out a good price on that
I hope.

So this Henning nickel pops up, in my experience this type
of coin you have to buy when you see it .. or it will be gone. I have been in a lot of coin shops over the last 40 years and I have never seen one of these for sale.

I think I might have to take the coin out of the holder to get a
good pic of the "R"

Here is what I got so far

Yeah...gotta agree! If I ever saw one in a shop I would almost have to buy it. Nice find.

Awesome! Great find! The price is soooo hard to set because they are not often available for sale. I bought mine for $20, but I've offered up to $80 before. I have seen them sell for $160. All in VG or worse.

Way to go!

Henning for sure! Great score ... still looking for one for my set.

Here is an old thread that at the time discussed the forums best knowledge of the definitive tests for a true Henning ...

Still looking for mine.

nickelsearcher, thank you for the link .. that is a good read.

I took it out of the holder, and this one weighs 5.5g

In hand it is easy to see the hole in the "R"

The more I look at .. not sure about the VG grade, leaning
more toward a G. I am thinking these coins did not have
a strong strike to start with.

thanks for the pics -- that is one Henning that had a rough life, but a Henning nonetheless!

I would have to say that your nickel has much more detail than this one.
I was just happy to have found this one. To me it is funny that the coin
shop I bought it from did not even know it was a Henning nickel.

They ended up asking me what I would pay for it.

Awesome! great story! Hope you got a good deal. Depending on my mood, I would probably pay up to $40 without hesitation and could be persuaded to go higher.

There's an article I read a while back that said that a local coin club helped the Secret Service track Henning down. Banks weren't finding samples of the counterfeits (because -- as he predicted -- "no one" looks at nickels), but collectors do look at nickels and noticed (and hung onto) the oddities.

I have a very good relationship with four different coin shops. I buy a lot of coins and they know I do it as a
collector and not as someone that is going to re-sell the
coins and compete with them. Just saying this to explain the prices I get, could be lower than what some might pay.

They asked what I thought it was worth, I offered $20.00,
they asked if I would go $25.00 ... I told them they were
taking advantage of me, but I was in a good mood today.
I gave them the $25.00 for the coin.

Of course this is most likely a good start point for this coin, but I know to the right person it could be sold for
...more than that.
