Looks obvious to me:

Messaged seller, he responded that it was just a strong strike. I don't agree; the shields never look like that as far as I know, and the letters look too 'bold' in the shield. I've seen some re-engraved coins and those markers immediately threw up a red flag. He looks like a good seller, but the coin just looks wrong to me. I'm looking at coins on heritage now, and the coins there still look a bit different (even the really strong strike ones).

Maybe I'm missing something, but what are your thoughts?

I don't collect these, but the appearance raises flags--the face doesn't look right for a US coin.

these differences may be related to die varieties:

obverse, word "liberty" on shield should be vertical, the shield looks tipped over some, the face looks strange, the lower part of ground is wider than ones I have seen, were there stars in 1837?

reverse, the lettering looks small

That looks so incredibly weird. Fuzzy - the no stars is correct for 1837.

But... all of the details seem very flattened with extremely defined lines around them... = wear + retooling. That eye looks hilarious too.
