Hi,

Looks like I stumbled upon another fake pillar ...
The seller was sure about the coin, as he told me it was acquired from a renowed auction gallery a while ago.
I had some doubts when looking at the pictures, and my fake-o-metter went to 80% sure when I saw the rim with only one overlap.
Here are the detailed pictures, can someone confirm that this coin is having issues ? (or is fine)

I don't like the look of the coin. The mintmark looks wrong as well as the assayer initials. The edge is too intense and I also only see one overlap. I would pass on the coin. It is a common date/variety so it should be easy to find a better one.

Just rechecked the weight, it's 26.96g - which is fine.

As you said, the rim looks too intense, I have some real ones and I never saw a such detailed rim. Moreover the second overlap is missing, which was the biggest hint to me.

Just found this link, seems that this coin is a known copy (ancient one or modern one ? - I dont know) : http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/3567808

Another link, with a genuine coin from the same date (without overdate though) - the J in the essayer mark is clearly not correct : http://coins.ha.com/common/view_ite...=21945#Photo

I also noticed that the second pillar looked different (empire style) - but as the coin is an overdate this should have been fine : here is one from 1768

The 1769 Lima comes in 2 varieties, royal crowns (crowns alike) and one imperial, one royal (crowns different)
I have never seen a true 1769/8 overdate and I do not beleive it would look like the date on your coin. Interesting that you found a similar fake listed in another auction. At least this one has an easy diagnostic to notice it right away.
What are you missing in the pillar/portrait series for your type collection?
