Hello. I have a question I recently just started helping my youngest son collect pennies and he has shown me a penny from 1952 with a s mint. I have googled about errors and stuff about pennies and this one looks like In between the B and the E there is hunk of copper. how would one tell about finding out if its a true error and how rare things like this is. Thank you for your help.

That is called a "BIE." The area between the devices are chipping probably because of a clash in that area. It continues to chip away untill it reaches the outside of the devices in that area. It looks something like this:

Except that Coop forgot to mention that they are actually pretty common, and very few people collect them.

Un-like varieties, these would vary as the chipping of the die could be in different die states. Making on a few varying degrees of chipping. So it was very hard/if not impossible to give numbers to these. The dies were over used during this decade and a lot of inferior coins were created and were normal while the mint made a many cents as possible from these dies.

People do collect BIE's. There is even a book on these that someone printed awhile ago.

Could be. I don't remember when it was printed or by whom, only that it was printed. So at one time, whenever it was, there was collectible interest in BIE's.IMHO.
