On behalf of a dear friend, I am exploring the options to auction a coin valued in the low-mid four figures according to available auction data and one preliminary appraisal. The coin is a common 1799 U.S. silver dollar slabbed and certified by NGC as XF45.

I have a fair amount of experience buying/selling on ebay, but not at this price level and not with coins of any significant value.

I have identified Heritage Auctions and Teletrade as possible alternatives, but it appears the any increased value that might be realized over ebay may be more than offset by higher fees.

I would appreciate your thoughts/experiences/recommendations on what is the optimal choice and anything to beware of in selling one coin of this value at any of these sites.

Also, if ebay is used, is there an optimal length of auction?

Thanks!

Get good pictures, one of each side of the full slab and 1 of both the obverse and reverse of the coin itself. List the coin as an auction with a starting bid of $4000. Five day auction. Accept Paypal only and only ship to the US. I like to use $15 shipping. You will lose a few bucks on the shipping. Start the auction so it ends around 10 PM Sunday night. (eastern time)

Check the value on the NGC website by entering the number on the slab. NGC coins typically sell for 80-83% of the NGC stated value. Probably less on this coin.

Also be sure to check out the NGC site as the Chinese were making fake NGC holders with fake coins in them. The NGC site has pictures on how to tell their holders from the fakes.
