I sold a 1964-D off metal Copper Nickel a few weeks ago. As I was searching some coins for sale I found my coin, but it's been re-toned. Just thought I'd let you know in case someone here is looking to buy it.

My coin sold for $195.00...

The "new" look for my coin at $275...

You can tell from the marks that it is the same coin just re-toned. Check out the nick on the rim near the "Y" in LIBERTY.

Oh well, guess you have to make money any way you can.

sharp - Intentionally toning it in a short period of time will hurt the value. Sometimes people will do it to try to make cleaned coins look more original

Nice coin! That's the coin I wish I had bought.

I know the toning done on the coin looks fake. I know people do things to coins to "enhance" the value, but I wouldn't do something like this to any coin. It looks bad, but someone out there may think it's natural toning and pay almost $300 for a modified coin. The coin I had was cleaned before I bought it and I sold it, at a small loss, because I didn't like the fact that it had been cleaned. I don't clean my coins and would never modify the surface to up the price. I just wanted to point out that the coin for sale now didn't look like that a few weeks ago.

Oh, I just found the coin for sale on ebay, too http://cgi.ebay.com/1964-Denver-Min...646227208418 It's not the same name as the buyer I sold it too, but that buyer has a "No Feedback" buyer only account. I can't say it's the same person that bought my coin has it for sale now. He may have bought the coin from the person who re-toned it.

Should I contact him and let him know it's not natural toning, or just let it slide?

I'd say let it slide ... it does not sound as though it's just some amateur collector who was fooled. If anything, I'd report it to ebay, though I doubt they'd do much since it is still at least a real coin and not a counterfeit.

Ok thanks mshey. So basically they will be really shiny? Look like a proof coin practically?

An Off Metal Nickel on a cent planchet, or any other copper planchet, will be any color that a Copper Cent can be and (may) have soft details because not enough metal is used for the strike.

The coin in question does not look natural now. The tone is uneven and the front and back don't match. It looks as if it has a spray-on tan.

If the coin is copper it should tone like copper if it's exposed to handling or enters circulation. I've never seen a "Copper-Nickel" that looks Proof Like, but I guess it could happen if the dies were polished or it was struck with proof dies.

THAT would be a WOW coin. "A Copper Nickel Proof!" I love Off Metal Errors. I was just pointing out that the one I sold a few weeks ago was for sale again but was artificially toned now so that if anyone here was looking to buy it, I have photographic proof of the re-toning done. I'm also NOT saying anything against the seller. a coin can change hands several time in just a few weeks, and the seller name isn't the same as the buyer name when I sold my coin.

Sharp - Cleaned coins can be shiny but it depends on what has happened to it (but regardless of approach - don't clean!). They won't look like proof coins. Coins can be dipped in a cleaning solution (or worse, over-dipped, to the point of losing some luster), polished (it was look shiny, but a very fake, flat shine), or cleaned harshly with a brush (which will leave parallel hairlines).

Does anyone have a link to a good post on cleaned coins?

Re-toning attempts to give a coin back a more natural, aged look. Toning occurs naturally over time because basically any metal will react with air (and in some cases, the old holders they used to be in). But forcing re-toning to occur in order to cover up a cleaning is an act of coin doctoring (messing with a coin in an attempt to increase value).

This is nice to see. The coin I sold on ebay and then found for sale re-toned is for sale again on ebay. The seller does note in the description that it's re-toned. They just went up a notch or two in my book.

They already noted it in the description, so the seller knows and is being honest about it.

No, No, No. The FIRST time I saw it on ebay I didn't see anything saying that it was re-toned. This time, although they are asking the same price, the DO NOTE that it's been RE-TONED. I was happy that they were noting that fact. It's still not in the description on their web site, but they are telling the truth on ebay. That's why I said the went UP a notch or two.

I don't think the coin is worth anything like $275. I was happy to get what I did because it was cleaned. I didn't catch that fact when I bought it on ebay last year. I put it back on ebay for $195, about $15 less than I paid.

No one needs to email them, they are getting better with the description, I just wish it was in the Title.
