The pictures are definitely not conclusive like they should be when picturing a mintmark variety. If I had to call it one way or the other, I would say it is a Type 1.

You can see the difference for 1979 even with poor pictures but 1981 is much more subtle and it is not a simple question of filled vs clear. The 1981 Type 2 has round openings and large bulbous serifs while the Type 1 has oval openings and small rounded serifs. It is also worth noting that the 1979 Type 2 mintmark is the same mintmark as the 1981 Type 1.

Thanks Bio. That is what I was thinking. Pictures are tough when looking for the 81-S type II because as you said the subtle differances are hard to see. Thanks brother. WOLF

I can't tell from the pics. I'm not sure if it is flat or if its just the camera angle. Same thing for the ends. I found a similar listing and won it for 99 cents. The pictures were taken on an angle from a distance and looked pretty good. But when the coin got here it was type1. I figured it was worth the gamble. Loss vrs reward. I look all the time! I got hooked after scoring one off ebay, bought a small run of proof sets 74-82. Skunked out on the other dates but the 81 had a T2 SBA and Roosevelt. You should Ask him to send you some close ups of the mint mark. If he gives you the run around, more than likely its a bust. and I'm not sure if theirs other pick up points that will help call it or not. I just go off the mint mark. The Red Book is very miss leading. I too started looking for Clear S's. Until I saw the Cherry Pickers Guide, their photo of SBA didn't make it crystal clear for me. It was the JFK half that really made me say oohhhh. Good luck!! Their out their!. I'm up to 5 81 sets now counting the good one and that Roosevelt dime. lol Anyone know anyone selling Type 2 Cent, Jefferson, Washington. For a decent price. Please let me know. Once again good luck wolf.

I have looked at this coin and compared it to my PR69DCAM Type 2 and even though the photos provided are from a distance, I would say this coin being offered shows the bulbous serifs and is NOT a blob. I do agree with this type coin you should be certain as this clearly is a key and for the money, it should bring I would take the safer road to be free of any mistakes, asking for close up photos is an excellent idea, just my opinion.....
