I bought this at a shop yesterday, for the princely sum of $38. It looks basically mint state, but it has some thick patina and a bit of verdigris on the obverse at 9:00 and about 10:30. It has a surprisingly intense proof-like flash and I'm wondering if it could in fact be a proof. I'd welcome any and all opinions.

First photos: light source located off to the upper left.

Second photos: light almost directly overhead. These shots show the bright proof-like flashy fields.

Also, I wonder if Bad Thad cares to weigh in: is this a candidate for treatment with Verdi-Care?

Thanks everyone!

I don't think it is a proof, but it is a very nice coin. Shame about the verdigras but it is very minor and it is not in the main fields- it's about in the best location you can ask for.

Doesn't look like a proof, but the minor proof coins of 1887-1889 were carelessly made, many were struck only once, so it could be. The signature square rims are missing, and mirror fields are not obvious in the picture with the angled lighting, so at best this could be catagorized as a business strike PL or made from ex-proof dies (notice the die crack from the "U" in united through to the digits of the date?)

Great coin, it looks like a little wear on the high points.

AU58 my best guess. PL may show up in hand.

UPDATE: I purchased a small bottle of Verdi-Care from Badthad and treated the verdigris areas on the obverse rim. I only applied the product to the rime areas where the verdigris was visible. Most of the green residue did come off and I don't see any negative effects.

Here are some before and after shots. I may try one more application to see if the last traces of green can be removed. I think I will need really fine-pointed tool to massage those deep crevices between the denticles. Based on this experience I would recommend this product; thank you Thad!

Here's an '81 Proof for reference. The toning (and $*#$@! fingerprint) hides its mirror finish, but it's there..

This is a 1907 business strike I used to own that had an obverse with normal luster but a blazingly reflective reverse-
