In the past few weeks I have been looking for a 1928 Peace dollar with an AU grade. In my copy of the Greysheet they list them in AU at $365.00 to $390.00. Checking different online coin dealers they are selling around $420.00 to $440.00. Is it the low mintage the reason for the premium? Also, should I go ahead and bite the bullet and pay it?

Wornslick, in my limited experience I've never found the Greysheet to be a realistic price guide at the retail level. I don't even bother using it anymore because it's so far out of whack. I've concluded it's basically a tool for dealers but not for us buyers. Instead I rely on recent auction hammer prices, and prices listed by PCGS, NGC and Numismedia.

Thanks Sidekick, by auctions I guess you are talking about Teletrade and Heritage?

The site I go to for prices lists it as being worth $530 in AU. It is low mintage as only 360,649 were made in Philly, a rare coin and a nice addition to any collection.

I think around $400 is a good price for a nice '28 peace, checking ebay anyway. I saw one go for over $500 at a bricks and mortar auction a few weeks ago. Just make sure it's not one of those one's with the "s" rubbed off

Wornslick, the greysheet is a wholesale bid / ask between dealers and normal retail prices can range from 10 - 20% over ask. At present there are some series that the greysheet is off, some it is a bit high and some it is quite a bit low, especially the type coins, in the current coin market. I've had a couple of dealer friends who attend several shows nationwide tell me that most common date non CC Morgan dollar prices are a little higher on the greysheet than what they are actually selling for, mostly becuase the demand is soft for them now. I buy my Mint State Morgan dollars from a wholesaler just below bid or at bid depending on the date. I just paid $200.00 for a raw MS-63 1882-CC and for my NGC MS-64 1884-CC I paid $220.00. 1928 philly dollars are relatively plentiful in high grades east of the Mrs. Ipi. Quite different on the left coast.
One dealer used to vest pocket them, buying them in Ahia for $100 or so, and making $30-40 a coin selling to dealers out west, where dollars were more popular.

Don't know what isn't understandable. It's like saying a dealer buys Anchor ware in Ahia, and sells it in a part of the country where there isn't a boxful of it at every yard sale.
