I think there are a lot of people out there who think b/c something is this old, plus it is silver, then it HAS to be worth a lot of money. We in this hobby can sometimes be amazed at how clueless people can be about these things.

I think you should smack him around a couple of times until he relises a right price for this coin.

This is just as bad as those vampires selling coins on TV. I cringe ever time I hear an elderly person, call up so excited or even worst you can hear the hesitation in their voice and sometimes they even say how little money they have but have to put something away for their kids, grand kids. I'd love to run into one of these people in a dark alley......the sales people not the elderly lol. I don't know how they get away with robbing people the way they do. It sickens me! I'd just love to be their (Watching 0:-) ) When that bright light opens up for them and they start their journey to heaven full of grace. But then every thing turns black and they fall. I'm sure their face will look something like all those faces of their victims, when they finally try and cash in their purchase. But are told its not even worth what they paid for it. So to all you that feed your greed from the pain and suffering of others. As you fall remember theirs no bill me later!

A big problem is many non-collectors do not understand the concept of grade. Hence, they might Google the date - see some AU pieces going for near $100 - and assume this is a good price. Caveat Emptor!

I think Fenton nailed it! How did that old GI Joe cartoon end?...."The More You Know...". That is what is so cool about this forum...knowledge is power. Unfortunately these shows do prey on the elderly and uninformed....

#1 The pesumption that this fool knows what he has is silly. Obviously he does not. There are a lot of people out there who just throw stuff out there with no idea. You can actually find very undervalued stuff for the same reasons.
#2 The guys on TV put a product out there and if people want to buy it, they do. No crime there. And to trot out the elderly thing...come on. The simple fact is there are a LOT of people out there who have NO access to local coin dealers, no clubs and lucky to have a show happen within a hundred miles of their house once a year. So you have these folks at coin vault that go out and find these coins. They purchase them and market them. They put them out there and charge a premium for their services. Its called capitalism and I LOVE IT. They provide a service that obviously people are willing to pay for. It doesn't make them bad, it makes them entrepreneurs. And if there were not people willing to spend that money, they would have to lower their prices.
#3 Yes, you CAN clean coins. Its just a matter of doing it correctly. Slight dips are not a big deal. though I have NO clue why that was brought into the thread.

Quote: I think there are a lot of people out there who think b/c something is this old, plus it is silver, then it HAS to be worth a lot of money. This actually happens to just about everyone that doesn't know anything at all about coins. They think its just like antique furniture that you see on antique roadshow or something where if its made of a precious metal and old its worth a fortune, what they don't understand those pieces are worth that much because not very many of them were made, there were hundreds of thousands of each series of coins made and sometimes more than that in some dates . Its hard to make them believe their coin that is 130 years old is only worth about 20 or 30 bucks no matter how many documents you have to show them also.
