For you who collect pennies what do you think about buying shotgun rolls with Indian cents on the ends. I know it's obviously a gamble but what would you pay for one. I have seen them on ebay and my curiosity is killing me and I'm considering buying one. The only thing is I'm not sure if it's a good idea.

Thanks for the information.

It's uncanny how the IHC (or even Flying Eagles!) gravitate to the ends of these rolls, and steelies and 1950 wheats gravitate toward the center. I can't explain it! It's almost as if by design...

There is a big difference between a gamble and a scam, anyone can assemble a shotgun roll and put whatever they want on the ends.

I'd pay for 2 low-grade common IHCs, and the rest common wheats: $3. I'd never pay for more than I can see.

I'd say about 5-6 bucks. Assume 2 IHCs at about 1.50 each and about 5 cents per wheat. I doubt you will win one though. These sellers "seed" their shotgun rolls with occasional ncie shape wheats or more than just the end IHCs and sometimes a semi-key date gets found as if they are unsearched after all!

I agree with you guys. I wanted to by one just to see whats inside but the lowest one I can find is over 10 dollars. I couldn't bring my self to pay 10 dollars for it. Then when I saw a shotgun roller for sell on ebay I was thinking to myself. All these people could be rolling them themselves or taking them into the bank to get rolled. to say they're unsearched but really not. If I ever see one really cheap I might buy it, but that would be the only time probably.

Thought I should put this out there...

A couple of weeks ago my brother bought one of these rolls for $13(including shipping) with two indian heads on the end, and I told him the only way to make his money back was to save it without opening it for awhile and than sell it again. That was our initial idea.

But as Murphy's Law would have it, the roll came torn so you could see a few coins' edges. No dates but enough to make any dumb buyer skeptical.
So he opened it and found a bunch of 30's and 40's and 50's wheats, a few 20's and a couple teens, and three indians altogether. The ones on the end were common dates but one inside was a 1909 in VG. Not bad for a risk.
Also there was a BU 1958, I mean how did that get in there?

When all was said and done we got our money's worth.

So we emailed the guy and gave him a neutral and told him the roll was ripped, than I casually asked him if he had wrapped the rolls himself. Of course he said no, and said he bought a box of them at an estate sale. He than wanted to know what we had found so we told him.

I think these are a scam. If you want unsearched rolls, go to the bank.

In all I have bought about 5 or 6 of these "estate" rolls or whatever the sellers refers to them as. I bought two from the same seller that had 5/6/7 IHC's in them, and a lot of early wheaties, the rest of the rolls were filled with 40's 50's wheaties with only 2 IHC's on the end. Most of these rolls are assembled by the seller and not genuine, however every now and then you DO come across the real deal, but that is far and few between.

what DVcollector said above.
Only bid on what you know and assume common wheats unseen.
Sure there may be a story or two out there where things were actually as advertised,
but overall it's a suckers game.
