hi,
will it affect the value of a 1881 us gold coin if it is made into a pendant by adding a gold rim on the coin?

Yes, and in a negative way at that. I wouldn't do it. Get a copy of that coin and put the copy in the jewelery. Store the actual coin in a safe place.

I wouldn't do it. A gold coin by itself will grow. In a pendant it will wear

As others have said, the value will be negatively affected. I understand the desire to add old gold coins into jewelry. Heck, I even have a set of Mercury dime cuff links! If you really want to put a gold coin into something like that, may I suggest you place a 1/10th ounce American Gold Eagle? It is newer and you can still tell people it is 22k gold. Personally, I would add something that is only gold clad. If you search on ebay you can find some overpriced gold clad coins. (gold clad coins are all overpriced) Take for example this coin: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...oZz6Fs4%253DFor less than $10 you can have something to place in your jewelry. That $10 is a lot less than the loss in value that will accompany the real coin being placed into a pendant.

if by gold rim, are you talking about a gold bezel that goes around the coin's rim? it should not affect the value of the coin, since it can be removed later I personally would be concerned of loosing it or possible minor damage to the gold coin

Yes, a bezel will effect the milling around the coins rim, even once you remove it. Also, if it is in collectible quality you will be much more likely to scratch the surface of the coin as you wear it. If your coin is not in collectible quality and only worth the bullion value, fine...wear it out.

It is critical to know what kind of coin. If it's a 2 1/2 dollar gold piece and it's not in mint state c0ndition, then the value won't be hurt much at all unless it comes out damaged. Maybe 10% would be at risk, and use of a bezel by a talented jeweler minimizes that. If it's a $3.00 gold piece in perfect condition, big mistake. You need to be aware that counterfeits exist.

1881 is a common date for $5 gold pieces. If the owner likes that date, it might be possible to find one that's already been used in jewelry, and keep this one for numismatic value.
One hazard with using coins in necklaces is over time, fabric would wear down the reverse. They make bezels that not only hold the coin securely (screw tops), but come with clear overlays to protect both sides of the coin.

As basically already noted a coin made into a pendant, ring, bracelet, etc. usually makes the coins value drop drastically. Regardless of how it is mounted, a coin in a pendant could also encounter dents, wear, scratches, etc from being worn.

I wear a $5 AGE on my necklace that I have had for years and it is held in a screw type bezel mentioned above. I did take it out to see what all damage the coin has indured over the years (I wear it all the time, never take it off) and there is very little wear or damage to the coin that can be seen without a loupe or microscope but there is some rub marks and scratches that would not have happened if it were just put away but I also wouldn't have been able to enjoy it by wearing it like I have all these years either, so it is just all in what you want to do with the coin in my opinion on what you should do with it. I would not use one of those bezels that clamp or solder the coin in there because I had a gold angel coin in one of those that I have had since I was a kid and the prongs did do some damage to the coin on it that you can see without even taking the coin out of the bezel

Are you really ok with keeping several hundred dollars around your neck?
I don't know about you , but in this day and age people are getting more desperate and I'd hate to have alot of money around my neck. I very much second the gold-plated coin idea, if you lose it or it gets stolen neither is a big loss.

"A gold coin by itself will grow". I've never heard that. You mean it actually decompresses years after being struck?

Quote: Are you really ok with keeping several hundred dollars around your neck? Doesn't bother me one bit. The heavy rope chain is worth more than the pendant. I do get a little nervous when I wear the 1 carat diamond ring I have that was appraised at close to $5,000.00 a few months ago but have never worried one bit about my necklace. I have a friend that wears a 10.00 gold indian pendant on his necklace and has for years and never had any problems. I gave my 16 year old a 900.00 diamond ring for his 16th Birthday that I had had since I was 18, it was bought for me by my uncle that raised me and it was handed down to him and I don't worry about his wearing it either. I do worry about him losing it but not really worried about someone robbing him for it. Do you worry about collecting coins that are worth allot of money because there is a chance someone may rob you one day? If you worry about it all the time you are not enjoying it. It may happen but I am not going to worry about the chance it may happen and not wear it because someone may do it one day. I have had allot of enjoyment and allot of meaningful conversations from wearing it that I would have missed if I had just kept it at home ion the jewelery box (by the way someone could have broken in my house and stole while I was out wearing the necklace and ring)
