This is one of a few coins I've bought because the price was too good to pass up. I'd like to get some guesses on Grade and Value from the experts. Please let me know what you think! The coin is Proof Like, but I'm still trying to photograph the mirror fields.

It's hard to tell in these photos, but the coin has heavy die clash on both sides.

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben, welcome to the forum.

Your coin looks about AU-53 to me, with just a touch of friction apparent on Liberty's hair curls and cheek and on the high points of the leaves on the reverse wreath. Die clashes are very common on these coins and don't usually affect the value. I can't really see the proof-like effect you mention but I agree it will likely be hard to photograph.

That is a hammered strike! Nice. I don't think the Proofs would have die clashing and I would surmise that the detail would be even more struck up and sharper if Proof. I haven't looked at any 1865 Proofs so I cannot be 100% certain. Could be worth anywhere from $60-$100 depending what it's like in hand. Of course, if it were a Proof, it would be worth considerable more.

I have been looking at these and noticed it6 is very very hard to find one without any clashing on it. Just about every one I have ever seen has some of the nicest clashing of any series I have ever seen, but trying to find one without any clashing at all within this series is a hard thing to do

Wow! Love the strength of the III. Agreed on the the clashing, have you seen all the RPD's and doubling? I am always noticing something new with these coins.
