Hi,
I have some knowledge of the wheel chair curling mule, I am credited with discovering this mule.(see Canadian Coin news)
I ordered 10 of the PL sets from the mint and put them away for a little while. I also was buying mint roll from the royal bank
I t was a few weeks later when I was entering the coins into my database that I noticed the difference be the roll coin an one of my PL sets.
I ended up with 7 mule sets. During the next 3 months I visited coin stores and post offices tiring to acquire more, to no avail. Only then did I contact Canadian coin news.
The 3 sets that were not mule sets were in different plastic. I was able to find out that the PL sets were struck in Ottawa on low speed presses in small batches as demand requires. (Winnipeg uses high speed presses for the circulation coins) The low speed press should give a better strike. Anyway as near as I can determine that the wheelchair curling mule was created on the first run after changing the plastic wrap as near as we could figure out there should be about 700 mule sets out there. It is very hard to get precise information from the mint. At first there were a good number on the market. People that were lucky enough to get them from the mint sold them for a quick profit. I have 2 left one is currently listed on ebay for $460.00
It will take time for the coin collecting community to realize how rare it really is.
