This coin belongs to a friend of CCF member Ag, and he would like some opinions on it's authenticity or otherwise. I hope the scans will be good enough to be able to determine if it's genuine or not. life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

I would like a lot more magnification on the date.

I'm not an expert on these at all, but I did an overlay of the pic above with the 1930 from here.In a series of steps, I've slowly faded in the coin in question against the reference coin. Notice what happens on the "0" in 1930; I've paused when the digit on both coins are visible. One more comparison--is the coin above the London obverse? Calcutta obverse:

DVCollector: That is an excellent piece of forensic photography! What you show here is more powerful than a blink comparison test between two coins.
I congratulate you.
Note that there are two dies considered legitimate for the 1930 penny: the London die, and the Indian die.
To be honest, the die variations in the area of the date are definitely not my area of expertise.
Nevertheless, it seems that in the date area, what you have demonstrated leads my less than expert eye to suggest that the subject coin is suspicious.
I wonder if it is possible to compare the Indian die and the London die variations as you have done above? THEN compare the subject coin to both recognised die varieties.
This standard of forensic photography could well lead to an article in a coin magazine. I hope you write it, and take the cudos.

Thanks Sel_691! I enjoy putting together these comparisons. While the overlay is not exact, it's pretty close. Interesting how the last digit (0) is noticeably different. Wasn't there just one reverse die? I look forward to hearing from collectors who know more about the 1930 penny.

Thanks Eg! Perhaps someone can correct me, but is there just one reverse die for the 1930 penny?

I've asked Ag to try & get a nice in focus close up of the date. I sort of had a feeling it may have been a doctored 1936 as I have seen pictures of those before, but I'm just not confident enough to make the call, but seeing DV's overlay was pretty convincing. I'm glad thesandpit gave his opinion, as I respect his knowledge regarding knowing what to look for.
